Do something physical. Seriously. And watch your blood sugar. I get into moods swings when the sugar gets low after being too high. Have a cookie, then run up and down your stairs.
Reminds me of a quote from West Wing that rattles around in my head when I'm thinking the same things you are. I looked for the exact quote but couldn't find it, so this is a rough paraphrase. But Abby (President's wife) is talking to another female about whom to marry, she says something like "It's okay to marry the dumb ones." When asked why Abby responds "Because the smart ones never come to bed at night." And indeed, Bartlett being up at night, not coming to bed, thinking about the worries of the world is a presistent reoccuring thing

I think short day length triggers depression in a lot of people (aka myself and to a greater extent, my husband). Personally, I find that bundling up and spending time outside in the sun as much as possible (preferably doing some sort of physical labor), helps to a certain extent.
However, I work on a farm. My husband works in a lab in the basement. I realize it's easier for me to do this than most people, but even the Fox acknowledges that a brisk walk outside during his lunch break makes a difference.
Don't think I can offer much help, but maybe some nice apple pies and a few good books read along with your people, will help pass the time in a more happy fashion.
