OOC~ Quasi-Meme, Character thing

This is a character evaluation thing. Really, the only dude I play who has a singularly defined voice is Guybrush so this is really more about continuity issues. If anyone has any questions or comments or criticism regarding any of my three characters, ask here. :3 You can ask why I play them the way I do, why they do certain things, what their ( Read more... )

Ooh, sounds like fun! *contemplates stealing it*

Okay, I have a question. Kinda stupid though, SO BE PREPARED.

DDD!Link is really different from his Computopia self. If Midna said half the things she says here to Compu!Link, there would undoubtedly be violence as a result. What exactly motivated you to play him as a very soft spoken and emotional character this time around?

Mostly it's me wanting to try something different. :3 Also, my other two characters are pirates, one a skilled warrior, the other a smart-mouthed goofy bastard. By giving Link a certain amount of emotional depth and a tendency towards "forsoothery" he gets a much different voice than those two so I will never get their personalities crossed in my mind. It also separates this Link from the other one, making it clear they are different "personas".

Plus, DDD needs more soft-spoken characters. XD Most of us are in-yo-face.

Neat idea, I might use this in the future. Noooow.... question! Why is it that Link's screenname is umbral_persona? Is there any special meaning to it? I'll admit I'm not that far in Twilight Princess, so if this is something in the game, feel free to whack me.

Now THAT'S a story. "Umbral" meaning "shadow", since Twilight Princess is pretty dark. "Persona" has a deeper meaning, though, which applies to the Zelda series as a whole. In certain Greek doctrines and in Jungian Psychology there are two aspects of a person: The "Anima" which is the soul of the person is unchangeable and eternal. No matter how a person acts, no matter how they live, their Anima remains the same and, after they die, goes on to reincarnate. The "Persona" is the changeable aspect. The word is from the Latin word for "mask". The Persona is how an Anima may present itself to the world. The way I see it the Hero of Time is an Anima and it has taken on a few different Personas, the most notable of which are the Link of Twilight Princess and the Link of Wind Waker as they both experience Awakenings of sorts in their games and are NOT the same Link as in Ocarina.

Whoa... that's pretty deep. I never thought about the Hero of Time in that way. It sort of sounds like the case with Fei and Elly in Xenogears.

Possibly! XenoSAGA used the Anima/Animus aspects of Jungian Psychology, I know. That's a different thing than what I'm talking about but still. Jung.

What motivates Guybrush? Vyse is pretty easy to figure out (WORLD) and I know Link's canon, but Guy's a bit of a mystery~

Guybrush Threepwood considers himself a pirate and, therefore, a professional vagrant. He is usually absorbed in battle against a demon named LeChuck who wants to marry his girlfriend and has defeated LeChuck on a number of occasions using nothing more than the agility of his mind. Despite the fact that Guybrush rarely speaks of his adventures he's done alot including exploring the Caribbean, being tortured, mastering Vodou Doll arts, being cursed, combating the undead, being chased by cannibals and going to Hell.

Typically, however, Guybrush enjoys just being a pirate and doing piratey things. His life only has high action in it when action happens to him as he seldom seeks out adventure. At this point he probably craves boredom.

Ichigo doesn't really know Vyse or Guybrush very well, but he thinks that Link is quite an interesting character. XD *wins for vaguness*

Link is the one people find the easiest to talk to, I think. Vyse actually LISTENS so there you run the risk of having him insist on Helping. Guybrush zones out.

Why 'speaks_to_loas"? 8D

That one's a bit easier. Monkey Island is basically the computer game version of Pirates of the Caribbean only made over ten years earler (1990 to be exact).

There are pirates, undead, Caribbean waters and lots of Vodou (spelled "Voodoo" in the games) magic being slung around. In Vodou religion the loas were spirits who were worshiped as if they were gods (but they weren't, Vodou acknowledges only a single over-deity). The spirits govern different things: water, death, flowers, sex etc. To cast a spell you'd have to commune with the loas, so, "speaks to loas".

In truth, Guybrush's canon is much more cartoony about this but I'm a dork. Also, every variant of "mighty_pirate" was taken.
