Traditionally, red is a color of high emotion -- feelings like anger or love. Our heart rates increase when we are angry or nervous, causing blood to flow faster and color our skin. Doubtless that's where the association comes from.

Not everyone is affected. Plenty escape a curse and then are affected by another. It's mere chance.
