If you're standing at the crossroads, you're already screwed. Metaphorically speaking. And the lesson you're supposed to learn is that God is an asshole.

But maybe sometimes you need an asshole to get the job done. Who knows.

He's past the point of sulking, done with sitting around in his now-empty apartment drinking, trying to ignore the ticking. His roommate has been gone for... what, weeks now; and he's run low on optimism. Mulder has gone on with his life, insofar as one can in the City; he's thrown himself into his work. He's tried and more or less failed to be sociable. He hasn't been able to bring himself to find a new roommate.

Mulder isn't expecting company, and it takes him a moment to get to the door. He opens the door without looking, without really thinking, and stops short when he sees who's there.

[ooc: sorry i was asleep |D yaaaaay scully~]

[Scully gives him a small, nervous smile. Judging from his reaction, she's been gone awhile. She doesn't know how to respond to that -- it's only been a day since she's seen him last. But that was a different Mulder, a Mulder that has shared her experiences, a Mulder that has seen things that this one cannot even imagine. What can be said?]

...hi.

"Welcome back." There's a touch of sarcasm creeping into his tone to cover his surprise, though the words are accompanied by a genuine smile. He didn't expect this. Didn't think she'd be back; though there's no reason why she wouldn't.
Mulder steps back, pulls the door the rest of the way open and invites her in with a sweeping gesture. The apartment's a bit of a mess-- not a disaster, but clearly lacking the usual android's touch. He shuts the door behind her and leans against it, looking at her. Seeking some clue as to what's happened in her absence. She looks-- better. Less fragile; it's hard to judge, having been away from his own time for as long as he has.

"Thanks." The sarcasm stings, but his smile reassures her.

She walks inside and is surprised by the mess. Although she shouldn't be, really -- Mulder has always been a slob. "I take it Data hasn't come back yet," she says, wishing they could just cut through the small talk but afraid of going any deeper.
