It's interesting that "alternative" swimwear is on the way to being more demure than most "mainstream" swimwear, what with the little skirts and all. I hope we don't go all the way back to the full-on Victorian bloomers, though - that model is lovely.
Interesting... it doesn't surprise me at all! Why did you think alternative would be less demure than mainstream? Surely alternative is merely characterised with whatever mainstream is not.
That's true, but in the past the "alternative" to the mainstream became more and more daring. The one-piece bathing cossie was probably the daring alternative to woollen bloomers, the bikini was the shocking alternative to the one-piece, then you have progressively smaller and more revealing bikinis... I suppose now there's nowhere to go.
Alternative fashion has generally been on the more restrained side most of my life - when I was in high school grunge was the thing, but girls dressed more like Kurt Cobain than Courtney Love.
People tended to do goth in a quite covering way too, from memory - more ear-high collars and knuckle-length cuffs, less stockings-and-suspenders.
Maybe the fact that these groups appeal more to middle class kiddies has something to do with the amount of flesh on display.
