I'm thinking about getting an Apple as my next computer...

I hate Windows 8.

And at work, every time Microsoft sends out an update for Internet Explorer, our parts catalog software needs to be tweaked.

Apples are pricey, but seem to have fewer issues like that.

Hmmm...

we started with a UNIX based software system. which migrated thru the various versions of Windows starting with 95.

At no point ever was there a smooth seamless transition with the new operation system.

Now we have needs to use other peripherals which do not work on Windows 8. We only used Vista sparingly and most stable was XP.

no option so far with our work and Mac so feh.

I know XP is 12 years old. But it IS stable.

That's another reason for a possible change for me. My home PCs all have XP. And good ol' Microsoft is finally NOT going to support it starting in April 2014...so I have to do something.

win8 is pretty useless for a business platform. Win8.1 shows a little promise in that it brings back the Start button, but I don't expect that to last either. Windows 7SP1 is functional for most stuff, and required for a fair amount more. XP is really a dead horse anymore, no matter how stable it is/was. As soon as Micro$oft quit supporting it with regular updates and tweaks, it became a lost cause. I'd say we have as many troubles with fun crud like Adobe and Sun Java updates as we do with M$, though ( ... )

Just move to Linux.
I favor Magia. http://www.mageia.org/en/
Plug and play. Free. Complete offfice suite included. Should have good music apps too.

Try digging out an old computer and installing a Linux package to see if you like it.
The big distros, Mageia, Ubutu, Suse and so on should have software that will read pretty much any Microsoft generated content, which is mostly to say that I'm a huge fan of Libre Office.
Several distros, like Puppylinux will run off a CD or thumb drive.... but they don't have the same features that the bigger distros have.
Have fun!

Thank you! I have at least 2 old PCs that I could do that on...
