When I'm writing, it's like a roadmap that I sort of follow. The character's want such and such to happen and I write it down. Then it gets to the point when, as an author,  I've got to strong arm things in order to make the story at least a little comprehensible. Yeah, it's definetly all about choosing the right pieces. Though, I realize when I have to start strong arming things I usually ignore the, uh, "concentration of characters desires".

Just solved a problem like this yesterday, in fact. Backtracked a bit and found the point where I wasn't listening, got things back on track. Woo.

I think for me it's a knock out drag out fight with how the character wants to say something and where the character wants to go. A lot of the times the two don't match up. You're right about the backtracking though. It's just a heck of a lot of work.
