Turnabout is fair play, it seems, as a couple weeks ago, my sister and parents surprised me! Of course, the only way they could get me to go down and see them without clueing me in was to imply

Wow, I don't even know you and I want to be in those family pics b/c they look like so much fun! I only have one sister who I very rarely see as an adult and we aren't close, and then our cousins were (basically) a generation older than us and we didn't meet/know/hang with really any of them.

It's so weird to me when people talk about not being close to their siblings or their cousins. I can't imagine what that's like. Especially not being close to your siblings.

I mean, similarly, I can't imagine what it's like to have a healthy, loving relationship with one's parents.

Let's just say it's not like I'm doing so well on the second one either (I think for at least semi-similar reasons to yours though different too, conservative religious European immigrant parents).

I do wonder if the sib/cousin bit helps some with the parental thing?
