Character name: Tsubaki Daisuke
Fandom: Giant Killing
Timeline: until manga volume 17 (manga is ongoing)
Age: 20
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: If playing midfielder for a professional soccer team counts, he runs CRAZY FAST and makes sudden amazing plays at the most unpredictable times. Other than that, he's just your average human.
How would they use their abilities?: See above.
Appearance: Tsubaki looks rather average in every aspect. Standing at 174cm (5'7") and weighing 65kg (143 lbs), he has black hair, black eyes, and well. Looks like your average Japanese guy. He has only been shown wearing his soccer uniforms or team jersey, which consists of black shorts and a collared shirt with black and red stripes.
Background/Personality: Tsubaki Daisuke plays the midfielder position for East Tokyo United (ETU), a professional Japanese soccer team that's struggling to stay afloat in the Japan Football League. Before the arrival of their new manager, Tatsumi Takeshi, Tsubaki was a quiet reserve who had never once set foot on the field for a real match. However, after proving his speed and stamina to be one of the nation's best, Tsubaki has been playing as part of the starting line-up for every ETU game thus far.
Unfortunately, Tsubaki is a very unpredictable player. Nervous and timid in nature, Tsubaki puts so much pressure on himself that he often screws up on the field. Yet at the same time, he always excels at the crucial moment. His high school soccer coach barely has any impression of him, but still recalls the one game in which Tsubaki won for the team by scoring two spectacular goals -- the game which a scout from a professional football team happened to be watching. This same miracle happens constantly for the ETU matches as well.
Soccer has always been an integral part of Tsubaki's life. When his elementary school was about to be shut down, Tsubaki suggested soccer as a game for everyone to play in the ball game tournament. As a result, all the teachers and students found a fun way to bond with each other in their last moments together, which was Tsubaki's intention all along. This incident also serves to show that Tsubaki has a way of connecting with others, and that he greatly treasures this bond.
As the manga progresses, Tsubaki grows stronger. He still shies away in fear when a strong player taunts him, and he still gives abysmal interviews to the press with his nervous, vague statements, but at the very least, he now has the courage and determination to go all out at beating his rivals on the field, instead of succumbing to his own fears.
To sum up his personality, Tsubaki is an adorable woobie who is very polite to everyone - he addresses people with "-san", even his own teammates - and really does try his best at everything he does. Or is told to do. However, he has a nervous tic and panics at the slightest commotion. He also has a tendency to fail miserably under pressure, but is starting to learn how to deal with that.
Have you read up on how the game works?: Yes! The Guide plug-in is called the Flaming Ferret, and our characters can earn money by taking on missions, freelancing, or stealing someone else's lunch money.
1st person sample:
Um... Sir? I'm not sure if I should call you Sir, since you don't look very human but um, could you tell me where I am? The last thing I remember is playing a skirmish match with my soccer team on the grounds, so I'm not sure how I ended up here. It'd be great if you could tell me where my teammates might be, too.
I'm sorry, what's that? I can't understand what you're saying.
... wait why are you coming at me with that fish? Why are you-- AAAHH did you just try to shove it down my ear!? Please don't, I really don't think you're supposed to do that with fish! I'm sorry, but I'm not going to stay in this room anymore! Goodbye, Sir! --- oh god is the door locked why is the door locked. S-S-Sir, please, I'm really, really sorry about whatever I might have said or done to anger you, but I think you should put that fish down and-- so slimey!!
......... oh that's weird. I, I think I know what you're saying now.
My world blew up?
Oh.
.... help.
3rd person sample:
Tsubaki was terrified.
Here he was: alone and flattened into the corner of a pristine, white room. Everything about the room looked like the inside of a space ship he'd only ever seen in the movies, and if that odd-looking creature with four eyes was telling the truth, he could very well be alone - the one and only survivor of his destroyed world.
"Cheer up, kid! At least you're alive, eh?" said the creature. Just minutes before Tsubaki had a fish down his ear -- he shuddered involuntarily at the memory -- the thing was talking in a series of undecipherable clicks. Tsubaki wondered if this was a sign that the fish was carnivorous and he was losing his mind.
"Anyway," the creature continued cheerily, "Now that we understand each other, let's have you registered! I'm gonna need you to fill in this short registration form here, if you don't mind." It yanked out a clipboard with an attached sheet seemingly out of nowhere and held it out for Tsubaki to take.
Tsubaki shrank further against the wall and stared at the clipboard like it was a frothing mad dog.
After a few awkward minutes, the creature slowly laid the clipboard on the ground. "It's okay," it said, unfazed, "Most first-timers need some time to adjust when they get here. When you're ready to move out of your little corner, just come sign this form." With that, it lumbered out of the room and closed the door behind it.
When Tsubaki was certain that the creature had left, he exhaled and sank bonelessly to the floor.
"This has to be dream," he murmured. "Right...?"
