Democratic Party Convention--Hey, I'm hopeful.

For those of you who don't know, I'd self describe as a lefty with some conservative baggage. I've never voted Republican in any election which borders on masochism in Arizona. I do live in Tucson and in Pima County. We're the Arizona equivalent of Austin Texas in Travis County; that is, islands of liberal surrounded by lots of conservative ( Read more... )

I'm hopeful, too. I don't think John McCain will be a good president and the country is feeling too stale to take a chance. For anyone hoping for perfection, the universe is indifferent to your plight. Just do your best.

well to me the clinton's cred in all things, not just political, evaporated a long time ago.
both parties have completely forgotten who and what they exist for.
business has totally sold its soul for the bottom line and our government has let it.
can obama change any of it? no more than any president can really do anything unless congress decides to grow some metaphorical balls and stop pandering to all the special interests be they liberal or conservative. there are a lot of very very difficult decisions that have to be made... ones that will be hard on both business and individuals. but they have to be made and implemented or else this country will either disintegrate or end up under a completely totalitarian dictatorship. at the moment, it's working hard on accomplishing both.
so hope? yes, i still have hope. if i didn't i'd leave. but though i'm not from missouri, given the past 30 plus years, they'll have to show me.

Color me shell shocked, cynical, and morose as a result of the last 8 years, but I honestly think that the democratic party will somehow manage blow this election. That Bush couldn't be beaten in 2004 speaks volumes.

That also said, if Obama somehow - despite the best efforts of the DNC - manages to win, I hope he has the balls to appoint a range of the political spectrum to his cabinet. One of the things I believe was a reason for the nightmare Bush presidency was the ideologically insular nature of the executive branch. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta aside, there has not been a single democrat in the White House for almost eight years. This buttressed by six years of a legislative branch not fulfilling its job to check and/or balance and we are where we're at. Hell, even Clinton only had a single cabinet member from the other side of the aisle.

The best move Obama could make is to identify and appoint several respected Republicans to his cabinet.

Here in Canada our political peeps have decided to have an election as well. I don't like any of 'em lol...as usual. I think it may be true that the people who should be running the country are too smart to get mixed up in the mess, and that the people who actually get into politics are almost invariably a) doing it for the wrong reasons and b) never going to be the right people for the job. Bitter much? Rather! But anyway lol...this means both countries may be going into the new year with new hands at the reins...perhaps we should, as Helios' horses did feeling Phaeton at the reins...okay I'll stop lol...
