Overview The "in health" of wedding proposals is always the easiest part. When there's no troubles, anyone can do it. But it's when there's a confliction be it sickness or something else, that the strong stand out.
Scotty walked in after work on a Saturday and saw Kevin curled up on the couch. He wore an ill-fitting red t-shirt with the words "Rock and Roll Constitution" in black, and jeans which, even with the belt, needed to be rolled up multiple times on the bottom.
"Did you miss me that much Kev?" Scotty asked, laughing.
"I'm doing laundry right after breakfast," Kevin said.
Scotty stopped laughing, and suddenly began to panic. It was after noon and Kevin always did his laundry early so as not to run into anyone else in the laundry room. Scotty walked over to Kevin and placed his hand on his forehead.
"Honey, you're burning up."
Scotty grabbed the thermometer from the bathroom and stuck it under Kevin's tongue. As he waited for the time to be up, Scotty went and grabbed a glass of ice water from the kitchen. He placed it on the coffee table in the living room.
"Drink this," Scotty said as he pulled the thermometer from Kevin's mouth and handed him the glass. "Oh no."
"What's the verdict?" Kevin asked as he sat up and accepted the glass.
"106.3. Do you have any other symptoms?"
"I laid down because my stomach was hurting and it hasn't stopped. I'm having difficulty swallowing."
"I'm going to call your mom. Please drink."
Scotty grabbed his cell phone from the table.
"Hello?" Nora answered.
"Hi Nora, it's Scotty."
"Is everything okay?"
"No. It's Kevin. He has a fever of 106 degrees, his stomach has been hurting all day and he's having difficulty swallowing."
Kevin jumped up from the couch and ran to the bathroom.
"And he can't keep water down."
"Okay, Tommy had similar symptoms and he had appendicitis. You need to get him to the doctor's."
"It's the weekend. Our doctor doesn't have office hours."
"Take him to the emergency room then."
"Okay, thanks Nora."
"You're welcome. I hope everything is okay."
"Me too."
"Bye Scotty."
"By Nora.
"Okay sweetheart, it's time to get you to the hospital." Scotty picked up Kevin and carried him to the car.
"I'm so sorry Scotty," he said quietly.
"What? Why?"
"I'm causing so much trouble."
"Honey, I love you. I'd do anything to make you feel better." Scotty grabbed Kevin's hand. "Please just be okay."
Scotty sat in the waiting room, his foot tapping nervously.
"How are you doing?"
Scotty jumped before looking up.
"Hi Nora." He stood up to hug his mother-in-law.
"How's Kevin doing?"
"I don't know. I haven't seen him since he went in."
"How are you doing?"
"I'm scared. I just want him to be okay."
"Me too." Nora ran a hand along Scotty's back.
"Mr. Wandell?" a doctor said coming into the waiting room.
"Yes."
"We did some tests, and your husband has appendicitis. We need to operate."
"Okay. Any way I can see him before you operate?"
"Yes, but only for a couple of minutes."
"May I come too?"
"What's your relationship to Mr. Walker?"
"I'm his mother."
"Yes, that's fine. But it has to be quick."
The two followed the doctor to Kevin's room.
"Hey Kev, how are you doing?"
"A bit better," Kevin responded, as Scotty took his hand.
"Look who I brought."
"Hi Mom."
"Hi Kevin."
"Don't harrass Scotty too much," Kevin said with a weak smile.
"You're going to be okay, you got that?" Scotty said.
"Yes'r."
"I'm going to leave you two alone. I'll see you later Kevin," Nora excused herself.
"I love you Kevin."
"I love you Scotty."
Scotty leaned down to kiss Kevin's forehead.
"I can't wait until I'm done being sick, so you can kiss me on the lips," Kevin lamented.
"Then work on getting better," Scotty said with a grin.
One last squeeze of Kevin's hand and Scotty left.
"Would you like some coffee?" Nora asked.
"No thanks."
"Would you like me to wait with you?"
"It's up to you. I don't want to interfere with your other plans of the day."
"Have you had lunch yet?"
"No. I was going to when I got home, but I got a bit distracted."
"Let me take you out. You need food."
"Well. . ."
"Kevin would want you to eat."
"I don't want to miss anything."
"I'll see if we can leave your number at the desk, and then have them call you if there's an update."
"Alright."
Scotty picked at his salad, knowing he should eat it, but at the same time being more worried about Kevin than anything else.
"Sweetie, a lot of people get appendicitis."
"I know. I'm just so worried about complications."
"I know it's hard, but try not to. Just have faith that he'll get through it."
"Kevin is strong," Scotty said, smiling with pride.
"And he will do anything to be with you."
Scotty took a sip of his tea.
"He loves you very much Scotty."
"I know. I love him too."
"Would it help if you called his siblings? Or should I?"
"I can do it. Thanks for the offer."
"Please eat Scotty."
To try and appease his mother-in-law, Scotty ate his whole salad.
"Feeling any better?" Nora asked when they were finished.
"A little."
"Let's go back to the hospital. Maybe they'll have some good news."
On the way back, Scotty began his calls.
"Hey Sarah it's Scotty. I just wanted you to let you know that Kevin's in the hospital. He has appendicitis and they're operating."
Scotty left similar messages with the other three siblings.
Soon all four siblings, plus Robert and Rebecca were in the waiting room.
"Mr. Wandell?"
Scotty stood up.
"It was successful. Mr. Walker is sleeping right now. We want to keep him overnight, but if everything is okay, he should be able to go home tomorrow afternoon. We'll give him a prescription for antibiotics then."
"May I go see him? I promise not to wake him. I just. . .I need to see him."
"Okay. Just be quiet."
Scotty followed the doctor back to where Kevin was. He stood silently next to Kevin's bed, looking down at his sleeping husband.
Kevin's eyelids began to flutter as his eyes slowly opened.
"Hey love, how are you doing?" Scotty quietly asked.
"Better. I feel very drugged right now."
"You should get your sleep. I just came in because I needed to see for myself that you were okay."
"They said I can go home tomorrow."
"I heard. I'm glad."
"Me too."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
Scotty gently stroked Kevin's cheek.
"Your fever has gone down." Then he squeezed Kevin's hand.
"Get some rest, so you'll be good to go tomorrow."
Kevin closed his eyes as Scotty lightly kissed his cheek. The last thing he heard as he drifted off to sleep was, "I love you."
