omfg i hate diagramming sentences with the fires of ten thousand suns. this is the one ONE aspect of grammar i have never in my life been able to do competently
so hey thanks for the sudden and unexpected trigger!!!!!
eventually it gets monotonous and time-wasting-y and terrible.
also I feel like Russian has a similar thing with trans. vs. intrans. verbs but I don't remember. I do remember their motion verbs are a bit out the wazoo and genitive case sucked lots of things that are suckable.
When you get to the really complex sentences with embedded clauses of all kinds, they're INCREDIBLY useful at showing how each piece of the sentence breaks down. When someone asks me about a what's going on in a crazy sentence, I usually whip out my pencil and start diagramming it first. And it's an absolute thing of BEAUTY for showing the difference between phrasal verbs and verb+preposition combinations.
Hurrah for English being an almost entirely case-free language. Our verbs may be a bitch, but at least we don't have to decline our nouns and adjectives!
