Just before I left work tonight, maybe half an hour after midnight, security dispatch sent a "code 2" over the internal radio system about someone getting shot on site. We in the control room joked a bit about physicists and their arguments ("the Higgs does TOO exist!") but everyone was a bit on edge. It's not something one often has to deal with

Someone committed suicide at the lab, right before I came, by jumping off one of the upper floors of the building on site into the open atrium below, in front of everyone. The news got out as I was packing to start my job, and it made me feel sad, but not as scared as I might otherwise

There was an "update" in our work e-mails last night, around sixteen hours after the event itself and written in very careful language:

Early Saturday morning there was police activity on the Fermilab site. The situation was quickly contained by law enforcement and there is no cause for concern. No Fermilab personnel were involved in the incident. When more information becomes available you will be informed through email or in Fermilab Today.
So that's all I've got for now, until I get back to work Tuesday night (the only reason why I know anything more in the first place is we have a radio receiver in the MCR, so I heard it firsthand). We had this jokingly pathetic little interchange as I was leaving in which I told my coworkers that if they did not see me in four or five days, they'd probably find my little gray mouse hat somewhere
