Fanfiction: Books they don't let you read in school

This pretty much sums up what happened to me when I discovered fanfiction.  Except that I'd been out of school for years.  Better late than never.

I don't remember any books we weren't allowed to read in school. But I do remember that I read at least 4 times as many books than the ones on the reading lists :D

I'm pretty sure my teachers wouldn't have approved of fanfiction back in the 1970s. I do have a friend - a high school librarian - who has heard of fanfic but has never read any. Her opinion is, if it gets kids excited about reading and writing, she's all for it.

I agree. I found fanfiction just four years ago and it was like I finally found a home where I was accepted for who I really was. Since I was nine, I imagined plots starring my favorite characters and crushes but never wrote them down. It was my comfort, therapy and secret life. I honestly thought I was the only one in the world who felt like I did. Finding fanfiction freed my spirit.
