Note 2: I got the idea for the fic when I was sitting at the computer and this HUGE bug was on the wall and I freaked out. But then it started flying around and it lit up and I was like 'ooh it's a firefly!' Then I tried catching it but it kept on escaping so I named it Houdini.
It was getting dark out, but the night was warm. The breeze was light and soft, and it reminded Junsu of the feeling he got whenever he was with HyukJae. Maybe it was because he was with him that night.
HyukJae sat over by the large willow tree underneath its large drooping branches. He was attempting to read the final pages of his book in the dying light. He leaned in closer trying to see the small type.
Junsu sat beside him, bored. HyukJae was being annoying and has refused to read the book out loud to Junsu. He sighed looking up at the stars through the thin sheet of hanging branches. Finding the little dipper, he traced it with his finger.
“I want one.” He said beginning to trace another group of stars.
HyukJae finally deciding to give up reading looked over at Junsu, “Huh?”
“I want a star.” Junsu repeated.
HyukJae laughed. He did that quite often to Junsu. He shook his head with a smile, “Have fun with that.”
“I’m serious,” Junsu looked over at HyukJae with wide, un-joking eyes. “I want a star.”
“Why? They’re just stars.” HyukJae shrugged, still not understanding his friend.
“But,” Junsu protested. “They are bright, pretty…”
“And unreachable,” HyukJae finished for him.
Junsu sighed, realizing it was true. Stars were unreachable. “But I still want one…” He pouted and slid down on the grass so he was now laying flat.
HyukJae just shook his head, at the silly want of his friend. Looking back up at the sky, through all the leaves, Junsu felt very insignificant. All those stars in the sky, there were so many. He changed his mind, he not only wanted a star; he wanted to BE a star. If he were a star, he would have many friends, and be surrounded constantly by their bright rays. Then he frowned. If he were a star, HyukJae wouldn’t be with him! He would have to be a star too. Pouting he realized how complicated that would get, and just decided that he wanted a star. He would be completely happy to not be a star.
He stretched and sighed on the soft grass. He was getting tired, and his eyes were threatening to close. Before his eyelids collapsed he saw a small very faint flash of light. It lasted only a few seconds as it floated in the air. Junsu’s eyes shot open, searching frantically for what he had seen only moments before.
“Did you see that?” Junsu asked in a whisper, thinking if he spoke any louder what he had seen would be lost forever.
“What?” HyukJae asked continuing to decipher the book.
“It was a small light...” Junsu explained, looking quizzically at the spot where he swore he had seen it.
HyukJae looked up at the sky and at his friend like he was insane, “Well, uh Junsu? They are called stars.”
Junsu glared at his friend tearing a clump of grass out of the ground and throwing it at HyukJae’s face. “I know THOSE are stars!” He protested. “I’m talking about…”
He cut himself off when he saw another small light streak the breezy air. He blinked and then squinted, trying to catch another glimpse of the strange glowing light. Then he saw it again, joined by another small light. Another streak of light followed the flash before. He turned his head this way and that seeing one streak here and another there.
“Look HyukJae!” Junsu said excitedly pointed out each little glowing light as they appeared.
HyukJae looked up dismally from his still unfinished book. “Those are just fireflies.”
“They look…like stars!” Junsu giggled. He reached his arms out cupping his hands around the air where he had seen a firefly only seconds before. He brought his hands toward him, opening them slowly to make sure it hadn’t gotten away. Frowning he realized he had not caught one.
Reaching out again, he stood and attempted to catch one of the many floating lights that scattered the air. Failing, he rushed over to another one and cupped his hands around it. Yet again he missed. Junsu was about to give up when he heard HyukJae scream.
Turning to face his shocked friend, Junsu laughed at what he saw. HyukJae was shaking his arm frantically trying to be rid of the small bug that had made itself comfortable on his elbow. Standing up knocking his book to the ground, he continued trying to shake the immobile bug from his arm.
“Get it OFF!” He squeaked jumping up and down.
“Don’t move!” Junsu said tip-toeing over to his frantic friend.
“Just get it OFF!” HyukJae exclaimed again, turning his head away from the dark colored bug like it was about to devour him.
Junsu slowly coaxed the insect into his hands and covered it making sure that it wasn’t possible to escape. He smiled in triumph. “I got one!”
“Yeah…now get it away from me!” HyukJae said and scooted further away from Junsu, picking up his book and making himself comfortable leaning up against the tree.
Opening up his book to the last page he jumped again and screamed. Another firefly had made itself at home on the books pages. Throwing it to the ground he leapt up onto one foot and hugged the tree. “GET THEM AWAY FROM MEEEEE!” He shrieked.
Junsu giggled, and peered into his hands trying to find the firefly he recently caught. Gasping he pulled both hands apart to look at his palms. The firefly wasn’t there. He frowned, and pouted. Then something tickled his wrist. He turned his arm to look, and there was his little firefly. His frown quickly grew back into a grin.
HyukJae continued to scream each time a firefly would fly to close to him. “Why do you like these…these things?” He waved his hand in the air, trying to get them away.
“They are the closest thing I have to a star,” Junsu said allowing the small bug to crawl back into his hand.
HyukJae squatted down and huddled closer to the tree. “Then if that’s a star…I do NOT want one!”
“I’m going to name it!” Junsu looked thoughtful.
“You’re going to NAME it?!” HyukJae exclaimed.
Junsu thought for a moment. “It will be called…HyukJae!”
“I don’t want to be a bug!” He protested.
“Well, you are a pest.” Junsu giggled as he was met with a glare. “But, you are a star too.” He added in hopes that his friend wouldn’t be so mean toward his new pet.
“Can we just…go home?” HyukJae pleaded as he narrowly avoided a firefly hitting him in the face.
“I’m bringing HyukJae with, though.” Junsu warned covering the tiny bug with both his hands.
HyukJae rolled his eyes picking up his book, “Just keep it FAR away from me!”
“Aw, but look!” Junsu said revealing the bug, “You look alike!”
“If I looked like that thing, I think I might kill myself.” HyukJae replied, shaking off his dirt covered book.
“Don’t say that!” Junsu said with a now saddened face, “Don’t you want to be shiny and pretty, and look like a star?”
“I don’t need to.” HyukJae scowled, “I already am one.”
Junsu sighed shaking his head. Poor HyukJae didn’t understand. HyukJae was Junsu’s star. He giggled as he tried showing HyukJae the tiny firefly that was nestled in his hands. HyukJae pushed Junsu’s hands away and held them there as they pushed through the dangling branches from the willow to go home.
“Thank you HyukJae.” Junsu yawned.
“Huh?” HyukJae questioned, glaring at the little firefly Junsu was now stroking with one finger. “Anyway…” He continued talking to his new pet. “Thank you for bringing the stars into my reach.” He glanced up at his confused friend and smiled.
