I guess I first knew of the story of Tristan and Isolde as way pre-Wagner, so I think of his version as merely the most well-known iteration of a classic story. And unless they were doing a movie-of-the-opera deal, I wouldn't really expect it. (And even then they might try to cover up the opera-ness in the trailer the way they often do for movie musicals thay they're trying to sell to a mainstream audience.) Anyhow, my point was just that I think of the "true" version to be the ancient ballads and epic poetry oral-tradition type forms, but I have a sneaking suspicion that they didn't really pay much attention to those either.

Though since you're being so fangirly maybe I shouldn't have bothered with rational discussion. ;)
