It amuses me so much that GTA: Vice City is in there. XD
Final Fantasy X tops Final Fantasy VII, for one.
I like them both, but I agree with this. VII is great, but X has a lot of sentimental value for me. (And FFX is #1?? Whoa!)
I'm amazed at how high VIII rates and how low VI does. Valkyrie Profile makes the top 30 and beats Chrono Trigger (Ha. HAHAHAHAHA!).
I should start VI sometime (a friend loaned me his extra copy), I really want to play VP, I'm not interested in VIII, and I should finish CT sometime. XD
Tales of the Abyss is in the top 50 (Fuck yeah, Japan!). Tales of Symphonia doesn't list at all.
Seriously, I question Japan's taste at times. I didn't mind FFX, but I can think of a huge list of games that were better than it. (I'm actually kinda surprised #1 wasn't a DragonQuest game...) Lack of Tales is a little sad, though.
I'm kind of torn, since an American list of the top 100 games would feature games I would probably never want to play. Japan has weird taste, but it's not one I totally disagree with.
Tales does a little bit better outside of the Top 50. Eternia isn't too far behind Abyss, which I'm pleasantly surprised about. (I never realized there was much of a fandom for it.) Both Destinies are there and so is Rebirth. With so many RPG series to contend with, I think Tales but up a good fight (even though Symphonia is woefully absent).
This is true. USA list would be even worse. Every single Halo would take up the Top 5 (if not the Top 3). There would actually be Madden NFL games on there. And GTA. It'd be a bunch of icky boy games...
I may have too high expectations of Japan or something. XD; I'm even kinda disappointed that they actually consider Sonic 1 better than Sonic 2... and seriously, I think most people would agree FFX didn't set the world on fire to the extent that Zelda: OOT and Super Mario 64 did. Or Super Mario 3. Of course, I gave up on the FF series as a whole after X-2, so maybe I'm just too biased... XD;
Symphonia's exclusion really saddens me. D: I mean, I'd have it up there if not solely for the fact that it has soulmate paths, which none of the other Tales games have. I like me some non-linearity. Eternia's love is kinda surprising for me... I have the hardest time finding Japanese fanart for it, ironically enough. XD
That's because FFVII was a pretty crappy game compared to the rest of the franchise and X was not. Their taste is still skewed, but what can you ask for from a company that rated FF8 before Ocarina of Time (or, heck, didn't put Ocarina of Time at the top!) /tongue-in-cheek. Mostly.
A lot of surprises, though. Wow. I wonder if I should pick up the Tales games that ranked above Destiny, but I didn't know there were any that were better than Destiny.
VII has a much higher nostalgia value though, which usually keeps it in pretty high regard here. That may not be as big of a factor to the Japanese, considering that many "classics" aren't ranked so well.
It was definitely a surprise for me. Most of the games I expected to be on there are, but definitely not in the order I would expect them to be in. Of the ones that made the list, I think only Abyss and Eternia came out stateside. Tales of Eternia was mis-titled as Tales of Destiny II in America, and is a moderately rare game. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit, though I haven't been able to play Tales of Destiny to compare it to.
That's true about the nostalgia factor. I'm really weirded out to see VI ranked so low, as usually it's counted the pinnacle of the franchise by people who aren't VII fans, at least in the US (it's nice to see IX getting some love). It's not that I dislike the game, it was my first JRPG and probably serious RPG ever, but it just doesn't seem to hold a candle to the other FFs.
And huh, TOD2 was ranked higher than TOD? That's weird, because I didn't like it as much as TOD. Definitely not a bad game, though.
