Applying for study abroad is SO COMPLICATED. The school I wanted to go to in England just started only accepting students in the spring. Now I'm considering the Glasgow School of Art, which MICA has an "independent exchange program" with, whatever that means, or the Arts Institute at Bournemouth, which MICA does not have any relationship with. My housemate introduced me to Help Exchange today, and I spent maybe two hours just looking at all the listings. Basically, people from all around the world who need volunteer help, such as on farms or various projects, will provide lodging and usually food in exchange for work. Rationality and honesty
I obsessively read the blurbs alongside art in museums, but often all I ever learn is that this piece addresses themes of something: nature or vision or institutional critique. "This addresses themes of." It's such a disappointing phrase. I use it too, when I've done something instinctively, without knowing why, but falling back on it is weak. It ( Read more... ) -
ears, buses, animals
I got my first ear infection! And the pressure apparently punctured a small hole in whatever membrane it is, and now sound is strangely muffled on my right side. This may take a few months to heal ( Read more... ) -
what's a city without lines? a forest floor
I'm home. It's really nice. On the plane, I kept looking at the city lights and feeling intense dismay at the straight lines and brightness of everything. I wanted to be in a small cave with no lights on-- the kind where it's so dark you can't see your hands. A traffic-congested highway, half bright white and half bright red, looked so awful. re: cities of the future
There's this MICA poster with the slogan "LIFE IS ART" or something. And I've realized that that slogan isn't/shouldn't be true for me. I've become conscious of choosing my personal limits for what parts of my life should and shouldn't be used for art. Like I now kind of think the dead seal was a breach of that limit.
