What about J(O) instead of JOIN? EFINNS isn't an awesome fishing leave, but it's pretty good, hitting over a third of the pool. Also, maybe BiALIES and VIA instead of ABSEILe(D) and VARIED to keep things tighter?

That's interesting; I hadn't seriously thought of JO, just looking to undouble the N's.

I spent like five minutes before playing ABSEILED before deciding, screw it, they're all pretty much the same, the time is more valuable that the difference between the bingos. *shrug*

I actually like VARIED over other plays (IIRC from shoulder-surfing Lucas' Quackling, Q doesn't) because it's using more tiles (hastening the end of the game) and because, despite opening for one turn, if he doesn't hit a bing that turn, it'll make it easier for me to seriously mess the board. Something like VIA -- which I did consider -- leaves the ANE hook open, whereas after VARIED, my *next* turn can block that hook and almost all of the lanes up top at the same time. As it were, he hit the bingo right away, but I think it's a reasonable gamble there to make him bingo immediately.

Oh, I thought VIA blocked the ANE hook. I might still like it best though. The thing with VARIED is that he's going to hit quite a few more bingos through AIRV and above AD next turn than he is by hooking ANE. I also don't think it's going to be as easy as you think to block the board next turn, since VARIED gives Lucas plenty of options to keep bingo lanes alive. Also, a bingo after VIA still leaves you up a pretty good margin, and probably opens lines for you to potentially use your excellent ADER leave for a bingo. When I noticed that VIA didn't block the ANE hook, I thought maybe DIVA would be better, but it turns out that gives away more bingos that VIA! (at least according to Quackle).

If he doesn't bingo right after VARIED, what sort of play might he make that a) blocks my QI or DAP or something next turn that blocks nearly all lanes and b) doesn't itself make the board more closed?

I'll give you that VARIED makes an immediate bingo more likely.... But if it isn't immediate it'll be tough to get down, I think.
