A rock and a hard place

Some terrific news was thrown upon me yesterday. Micron called me with a job offer. This came as a complete shock because 1) I was expecting this far from my interview to get the polite "we filled the position" reply and 2) I thought I did god-awful on my interview. This should be amazing news... but it's a little stickier than that ( Read more... )

A week to accept is reasonable - ask the hiring manager at Micron for another day or two if you haven't already. Plead schoolwork if you have to. The worst thing they can do is say no.

Next, call Schneider immediately, tell them you've had another offer, and that you'd really like to work for them and you think it'd be a great fit but you need an offer from them by tomorrow morning at the latest if they're going to make one. If they promised Friday for an offer and haven't gotten back to you by now, the odds are decent that they might not make you one at all.

If the Schneider offer hasn't come in by tomorrow, and you think the Micron job wouldn't suck, take the Micron job. That's what I'd do at least.

In my experience a delay in offers is usually caused by HR trying to dig through criminal histories and scouring the internet for any dirt they can find. So the guy he spoke to may think he walks on water, but corporate requirements being what they are the HR folks won't tender an offer until THEIR rigamoroll is all finished, no matter what the hiring guy screams/shouts/threatens.

At this point, losing the offer from Micron while hoping for a better one from Schneider is a bad idea. You need money and food and such to get your career moving. It is my understanding that you have to move regardless. So it's the bird in the hand problem. But unlike some years when trained people are scarce and jobs everywhere, now it's the other way around.

Unless there are negatives about the Micron job, why wait?

Only negatives to the Micron job is it's not in the field I anticipated (not a big deal) and I don't see myself staying there for the long haul to climb corporate ladders (also not a terrible thing).

It's more the concern that though I like Boise and don't doubt Micron would be a great place to work, I don't see myself staying long enough to put down roots (ie: buy a house).

My concern is settling for "job" when I feel Schneider would be a better "career". If I may steal some buzzwordness. This would be a much easier choice if I didn't consider Micron a good choice.

My first job wasn't my career either. And nobody is expecting it will be. But it'll be a job, getting you real world experience in the craft. And you can rent an apartment (no need for a house) and save up some money for when you make your next move, with a good history and hopefully into a better job market.

My choice would be go ahead and ask Schnieder if they can have their offer by noon tomorrow, otherwise you have to accept the other offer. This is a professional course of action and it puts the ball in their court; if they want you, they'll make it happen. Otherwise, you have a life to live.

Thanks for the advice. Went ahead and humbly requested a little more time from Micron (due to school) and I already contacted Schneider this morning with the news. We'll see this evening/tomorrow morning where the chips fall.

I know that it's need over greed at the moment. Need a job, just have that childish hope to get the job I want, rather than the one I need.

Thanks again,

Do you need to sign a written contract with Micron to make it official? If you do, that buys you some time for Schneider to come through before Micron is a done deal. Similar thing happened with me recently.

I'm gonna have to go with "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." Good luck with the decision!

Clock is running out and I think I am with you. If I don't hear from Schneider by noon today, I'll take the Micron offer.
