A good excuse to be a bad influence

Jul 04, 2009 12:58

Hudson leaned against his motorcycle, the nearly prehistoric Indian Dispatch he had inherited from one of his mother's old boyfriends when he'd run off an never come back, and he studied the outside of Midtown High from across the street.

Bo-ring.

He wouldn't have even been there if it weren't for the fact that he was supposed to do something ( Read more... )

Allison was freaked. She'd been coming back from the school nurse and had just been about to get her books when she found it. A small yellow note saying: "like father like daughter" and an old Electro mask for children ( ... )

Hudson raised a hand in a casual half wave, his eyes narrowed slightly behind his shades. Kid looked out of sorts.

Please God don't let this be some kind of girl thing, he thought.

Allison had almost forgotten that she was supposed to meet Sabreclaw after school today. She stopped for a second and then almost ran right to him. She wondered if he'd still take jobs for hire. It couldn't cost that much to get him to hunt down and eviscerate whomever had picked her locker right?

Hudson jerked his chin towards the back of the bike, holding out his spare helmet to Allison. "Get on. This place is giving me hives," he said, baring his teeth in the general direction of the school. "I was thinking burgers, cause I'm bettin' they ain't improved school food since I was a kid."

"I am on the straight and narrow, kid," Hudson reminded Allison with a small smirk as he forked over the cash and tucked the wallet away. "The Avengers are one hell of a cushie gig, lemme tell you. Free room and board, plus the weekly paycheck, and I ain't wondering when I'm gonna have to run from the law, since I kinda am."

"Do they really pay that much?"

The thought of it almost, really almost, made her rethink her stance on becoming a superhero. You know, if she wouldn't feel like dirt for kicking the the crap out of people just trying to make a living.

"I've had other gigs that payed better," Hudson admitted, "but that kinda stuff is few and far between, and then you're always wondering when it's all gonna blow up in your face. An I mean that in the most literal sense possible. Best pay generally comes from government work, but everything's got it's draw backs."

"But don't they ever give you trouble because you used to be a bad guy? That J2 guy seemed really smug."

That's when the window crashes inward, and a gorilla -- dressed in a suit, no less -- comes crashing through the window, a rifle in one hand, a group of well-dressed thugs on his tail. He fires a shot into the ceiling, as if to get attention... because, well, this is New York, and not everyone would pay close attention to the event otherwise.

"Awright," he declares, as the thugs behind him spread out, lowering their weapons at the various people within the restaurant, "listen up! Everyone stay real cool and calm, and everyone gets out of here okay."

Outside, the sirens come to a stop just outside on the street.

Allison can't help a bit of a giggle. Serously, this guy looks like a big monkey and he actually expects to be taken serious?

Hudson, on the other hand, didn't giggle. If anything his growl got a little bit louder as he scanned the room. Mostly mutants, but how many of them had mutations that would actually help? And Hudson knew about Big Julie by reputation, so he knew that this was probably gonna go real bad real fast, no matter what. The cops were already outside, so this was obviously a hostage situation.

Stupid.

There was no way in hell he was letting some overgrown science project in a bad suit rob him or use him as a meat shield.

"Get down," he murmured to Allison, "and stay there."

Big Julie glances out the window while his minions secure the crowd. He picks up a table and places it in front of the window he's just crashed through, to block police views of the scene inside.

"Here's what's going to happen," he says, turning back to the crowd. "Everyone's going to sit quietly, and no one will get hurt as long as you guys and the police are smart."

Allison knew she would only have one shot at this. So she got up in a quick move and threw the baseball at Big Julie's head, hitting him in the middle of his face. What she wasn't reckoning on was that the ball would ricochet.

Big Julie roars as the ball hits the back of his head.

Hudson worried at the fleshy bit he had in his mouth before letting go, deliberately raking his claws down before pulling them out. This big ape was lucky Hudson hadn't brought the claw sheathes with him.

He could feel the bite wound from Big Julie closing, but it felt like he'd been mauled by... well, by a gorilla.

Julie's little buddies had fallen back, unwilling to try and get between their boss and the mutant.

The gorilla hadn't even noticed the ball. Allison just sat there, stunned.

Hudson watched Allison out of the corner of his eye, barely reacting with each shotgun pellet the EMT extracted, thankful that the guy hadn't argued too hard with him about going somewhere else to do this. He wasn't about to let the kid out of his sight... and it looked like the cops weren't about to let either of them out of their sights, either.

Hudson was starting to wish he'd just slipped out the back when he'd had the chance.

Allison's back was hurting a bit from where she'd hit the wall when Julie had thrown her away. But she was too embarrassed to mention it to anyone.

Finally she went up to Hudson and gave him the phone.
"My dad wanted to talk to you."

Well, at least he wasn't charging here to come and zap him into next week.

Hudson took the phone, squirming a little as the EMT extracted the last of the shotgun pellets. "Mr. Dillon," he said neutrally.

"Mister Logan." The voice sounded a bit too calm and amused. "My daughter seems to think that you can tell me why it isn't her fault that the two of you were involved in a hostage situation?"
