I actually like DPNs, but I don't use five of them; I only use four. I use three to make a triangle and then knit with the fourth. The triangle shape makes it more stable than the four-needle square.
I attempted the magic loop approach once and seem to recall (it was a long time ago) that the extra cable kept getting in my way.
On the rare occasion when I knit a sock, I knit it from the toes up. I'm terrible at grafting, and starting at the toes avoids that pitfall. I actually knit everything that I can seamlessly anymore, because piecing things together is the bane of my existence.
I basically have all but stopped using metal needles. Even most of my circular needles are bamboo. You're right; the bamboo holds onto the yarn much better than metal does.
I hardly knit anymore, though. I used to knit in front of the television, but now that I'm trying to make some extra money with freelance writing, I don't have time to watch much, if any, television.
