The "Above the Game" Kickstarter: My thoughts may surprise you but shouldn't

Quite possibly this is one of the most controversial, disliked things I'm ever going to post on this journal. Content warnings for rape, sexual assault, misogyny, assholery and the FIRST FUCKIN' AMENDMENT.

Let's get this out of the way:

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.-- attributed to Voltaire ( Read more... )

first amendment bitchezzzzzzzzzzz, gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, someone is wrong on the internet, politics

I agree about this dude and his "book" (I would prefer to call it an "excrescence"). And I agree that if people want to give him money, that's their prerogative. Like you said, if you don't like it, boycott the book, and warn all your friends about it.

Where I draw the line with free speech is the Phelps mob and their intolerable "protests" at various funerals. It seems as if the authorities have finally begun to take steps to stop this. I also do not think that Neo Nazis would have the right to parade through Brookline, and I certainly don't feel that "right to lifers" have the right to intimidate women seeking medical care at family planning centers.

Just clarifying my own position. All power to you for speaking your truth about this subject.

It seems we have really reached a phase, esp on the Interwebs, where people would really prefer to jerk the knee rather than bother thinking five seconds about anything.

I think you are perfectly correct. I support the petitioners, reluctantly "support" (as in, yes he has the right to write it) the "book."

But I am thinking that I should do a Kickstarter to fund a counter-book to "Above the Game." I think I'd call it "Don't Get Gamed: A Woman's Guide to Shutting Down Those Who Think They're Above the Game."

It would come with a body chart of all the painful, debilitating places a woman can effectively strike someone who can't keep their mitts off her. And lessons such as, "If he is foolish enough to force his dick in your hands, guess what? You are now in control. Smile sweetly, cup his balls, then get down into horse stance, and grabbing firmly, quickly pull your arm back, twisting in the hips for extra power. Imagine his sack coming off in your hand. Nails should also be involved."

What do you think?

i support their right to print this. and i support the right of women upon whom this "advice" is used to take the lucky advisees to court for harassment and/or assault, and/or to commit harmonious acts of violence and intimidation in return. and i'd further support a nice lawsuit against the authors by his would-be advice-takers for their legal fees....

keeps this culture going, until it don't go no more. i have faith we'll see it through :)

While I agree with you personally, I'm increasingly afraid that the temper of the time is against us. I teach media courses in France to a generation of students who have spent their whole lives under a legal regime where, as in growing numbers of countries, hate speech and Holocaust denial and certain other types of speech are not protected - and I have never, in my seven years of teaching, been able to convince them how dangerous this is to their own freedom.
