(*blows dust off LJ*) OMG SPIDER IS POSTING, IS IT THE APOCALYPSE? (*checks watch*) Nope. But maybe this'll get me back in the habit.

AAAAAAnyway...

Dear Fanfic Writers:

I'm writing this because I've been reading lots of Supernatural wee!chesters fic, which in canon would take place in the 1980s. But it applies to anyone who writes fic ( Read more... )

It's so funny watching movies made in the late 70s-early 80s. I still love watching "The Exorcist" and seeing the doctor light one up in the hospital while talking to Regan's mom.

I'm old as well and this rings so true. I watched the old show The Sentinel and they GINORMOUS portable phones really point on how far we have come and how different things were then. You are right about the fact that seat belts wouldn't have been in the Impala, unless John was safety conscious My father installed after market lap belts in our car in the early 1960s because he was like that. The non-use of condoms was so true. Basically condoms were used with prostitutes as disease prevention or for a one night stand (maybe). The woman was supposed to take care of birth control by being on the pill or an IUD. It's hard for people to picture the day to day changes from one generation to another.

I don't know what makes my brain go *ping* worse, all the 80s detective shows where people are running around trying to find a pay phone, or Probe, where the hero in his sciency lab, calls a computer by picking up a landline handset and dropping it into a cradle.

Both of these came out when I was in college.

Actually, I do know what makes me go ping the worst. Having seen Jumping Jack Flash in the theaters when it was new, then pulling it out a couple years ago to rewatch and discovering how INCREDIBLY dated it was. When I still remembered it as fresh and new and up to date.

And no one ate sushi outside of Japan.

I remember the late 80s, when people started talking about it. Raw fish! The horror!

One of my favorite lines from "Desperately Seeking Susan" is the one about sushi (even though, technically, the cabbie is talking about sashimi).

"Sushi... I hate the stuff. Although, I tell you, I had some the other day. I took it home, I cooked it, it wasn't bad. It tasted like fish."

Exactly! In fact, my mother would still do that if anyone gave her sashimi.

In high school I had a Korean friend, and she would bring sushi type stuff to school, and I'd swap her for Vegemite sandwiches. We were totally exotic to each other! And my 'white' friends would be all 'oh my god, are you going to eat that? gross!' and the sad thing, it wasn't even more extreme sushi or sashimi, it was just California rolls!
