It's sad when people fail to apply even a smidgin of common sense to these things. Even assuming that it made sense for a site which was running out of names to CLOSE DOWN(!), why would it make sense for you to be able to prevent this tragic event by forwarding an email? It's not as if the authors even thought to include a note asking owners of multiple accounts to shut down their extra accounts...
You've reminded me of all sorts of scams that I've been sent, but I shall spare you the details. *sigh* people are so silly when it comes to the internet.

Following on from what Pezzae wrote, if people bothered to click on the link in the email and read the article (which I did the first time I got it) they would notice that the article they are referring to is dated something like 3 or 4 years ago.

I know! I pointed that out in my reply as well. I just can't believe that people are so gullible/non-critical about these things.
