I disagree that "I'm not inspired" means "I'm not disciplined." I'll agree that "I cant' work, I'm not inspired" means "I'm not disciplined." But being able to chug away and being inspired are different, ya? Being inspired is all "Everything clicks! I diarrhea all over the page and woah, it's art!" and being disciplined is like "I don't know where to put the line. Hmm. Let's see, this is two thirds across the page and that's supposed to be good, right? Oh, yuck. That looks terrible. What about on the other side?"

There are also those days when you can chug away for hours and no matter what it looks like utter crap... that sucks.

I think people who are frequently inspired don't have to learn to be disciplined, and then when inspiration doesn't strike and they're working to a deadline they have massive problems... also, I'm not sure better art comes out of one than the other. Being inspired is definitely more *fun* than being disciplined, but the "woah, you're Inspired By The Gods" thing is silly, I think.

I DEMAND STRIPE PHOTOS.

Ah. Very true! I did mean "I can't work, I'm not inspired" = "I'm not disciplined"
And I dunno, I think you need both inspiration and discipline to be a really good artist (I suppose there may be exceptions for that one in ten billion art GOD, there's always exceptions). I've seen people with amazing talent sink because a) they only worked on things that were fun and easy for them, thus they could draw fantastic figures but crappy backgrounds, and all their work started to look the same after a while and b) quantity *is* important, and sometimes you do have to power through those non-inspired periods. If people are/want to be professionals, anyway. And, yknow, what looks like crap to you probably looks fabulous to others ;) Quantity over quality is probably a lot more true for comics than painting tho; people will overlook a page that's artistically sub-par as long as the story moves (and if it's a good story, of course) really easily :P

iee, stripe photos! When I get home :)

Totally agree. You can get pretty far with just inspiration and then when you need that extra push you just can't get it. You can be a great amateur, but not a professional.

I'm not sure that inspiration is necessary at all. I think you might be able to have just as good ideas by thinking about them for hours or days as by having them come to you in a flash of light. On the other hand, if you *don't* have to spend that time trying to think of an idea, you've got it available to spend working.
