Hi! I don't know you, but I wandered over here from debunkingwhite.
I think maybe part of the issue is that it is a MASCOT...and many mascots are animals. So, you have the bumblebees, the hawks, the bears, the lions, etc. And then you have the Chief. It seems kind of messed up. All of these animals, and then a human being.
Also, the purpose of a mascot, from what I have observed, is not to be a leader exactly. It's not typically a dignified position. And if he is wearing ceremonial regalia, that seems to make it more problematic in some ways, because this regalia that was meant for a very certain, perhaps very spiritual thing, is being paraded out during sports games.
Anyway, it seems to me that those who want the Chief removed shouldn't have to say "this is what's offensive about having The Chief as our mascot..." because having the Chief as your mascot IS what's offensive. There don't have to be reasons beyond the fact that he is the mascot.

I agree that it would be a much different issue if it were approached in that manner, and if your school had other structures in place that helped support the respectful and appropriate use of a native american icon.
I would love to see your revised opinion post, if you feel like unlocking it. Thanks!
*nods* it just seems almost as racist/unfair not to have *any* ethnic icons as to have bad caricature... what's worse, a bad stereotype or pretending someone doesn't exist? Apples and oranges, maybe.
Dur, I found the entry and unlocked it, but now that I've reread it I remember it was wasn't very well thought out XP It's here, but the pertinant part was
