summary: Her friends still carry the weight of the event that happened that summer.
They’re drowning in her.
In her memories, in their guilt, in their inability to see her-they’re drowning in her and Menma doesn’t quite know what to do.
She’s lost. Menma doesn’t know why she’s there; all she only knows that she has a wish to be fulfilled to move on.
She’s neither here or there, with Jintan as the sole person that can see her. His eyes are brown and his hair is longer, ruffled and messy, and his look suits the way he lives. She thinks she might have been the reason. The reason he is such a hikikomori, she means, not possessing the ability to change Jintan’s appearance.
She’s not exactly a ghost and Menma is certain is she dead; she remembers the coolness of the water as she plunges down, down, down into the river until it all fades black.
But still, after all these years, she’s haunting her friends- beautiful Anaru who thinks she killed her by asking if Jintan liked her; kind, shy Tsuruko with her half smiles that hide anguish and pain; Yukiatsu with his soft eyes when she speaks to her, his undying love for her; Poppo because he can never forget how she’s slipped away from them, from him, in that river seven years ago; and Jintan, the fearless leader of the Super Peace Busters that likes her in the way that he would marry her but could never be with her.
They all remember her long white hair swooshing back and forth as she runs, the bright blue pools as she smiles and light up their faces. They remember the sandal that floats downstream, when they put an end to that life, the girl on the pedestal that all of them love gone. They put away the event as a tragedy in their lives they can never forget.
She wants to tell them they weren't at fault. She wants to scream, to tell them that her death is just a part of life and fate. She’ll be able to reincarnate. She will!
Menma watches the fireworks light up and takes off. She hopes that she too, will be able to fly to heaven and ease the pain in the hearts of her friends.
She’s lost.
Maybe they can find her.
A/N: Reincarnation? Rivers? Who didn't see that?
