Second thoughts...

So I've been working as a TSS provider since about June, and what I do is I work with children with various behavioral disorders (ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, Autism, etc) and use different techniques to change their negative behaviors.  I was really really excited at first because I was finally going to be getting my foot in the door, career-wise.  ( Read more... )

Is there a way you can keep in touch with the family on a non-work basis? Apparently you know how to deal with the kid and although he may not appear like you very much, he might secretly enjoy your company and just not know how to show it (just a guess, I know next to nothing about Asperger's and autism as it relates to behavior). You might be able to help the family out one or two weekends a month to help care for the kid or keep him company, take a bit of stress off the parents who are probably exhausted from the week. Then you're not abandoning the child, but you get to work somewhere that suits your needs a lot more.

That's a nice suggestion, and thank you :-) but because I am assigned to this client through my agency, that's the only way I can work with him. If I tried to have a relationship with him outside of the job it would be breaking ethical guidelines. He will be assigned another person who will essentially take over where I leave off, so I know he won't be deserted completely.

Ironically, I had a dream last night in which I took him to a science museum, like the Franklin Institute in Philly, and while we were there I lost him for several hours. When I found him, he was very upset with me and his grandmother was there and she was disappointed in me. Talk about a symbolic dream, eh?

Really I'll be okay though and so will he. Its a case of "you gotta do what you gotta do," and I need a job that will provide me with enough hours. He needs someone to administer behavioral interventions, and we will both get what we need.
