Folks in rural india/ asia will wear masks on the backs of their heads when working outdoors in areas with large tiger populations.

This isn't exactly true; they WILL if they're desperate enough or if they feel threatened. However, they won't hunt prey that they know are dangerous if they think they prey knows they're there - this is true for most "intelligent" predators. If they're smart enough and think the risks outweigh the prize, they won't go for it. Also, that mask thing doesn't always work because tigers are smart and individuals eventually figure out where a person's face really is.
