Obesity 'not individuals' fault' - Report

Oct 17, 2007 19:39

What, so it's the government's fault that we, on the whole, choose to have and/or do nothing about having a bad diet and bad lifestyle?

So on the one hand we have people moaning about the government turning into a nanny state and being too involved, and on the other we need them to get us to eat and live healthier?...

You're comments are very much to the point, Spike! It's all very confusing.

The report isn't made clearer by the quote in your subject line, which is a journalist's provocative spin on the report, rather than what the report actually says.

I think the report was just trying to make the PC observation that it's not OK to jeer at obese people just because their weakness happens to be very visible. On the other hand, it's absurd to suggest that people don't have a personal responsibility for what they put in their mouths.

The standard for obesity is also confusing. To me it's very clear that too many people are grossly overweight, but the NHS measure is weird. It tells me I am borderline overweight, but not even my wife accuses me of being even slightly fat.

Individuals can no longer be held responsible for obesity

BULLSHIT!!!

I'm overweight (according to the NHS's stupid body mass index thingy, I am actually clinically obese!) because I eat too much and I'm a lazy cow! *lol*

"Dr Susan Jebb of the Medical Research Council said that in this environment, it was surprising that anyone was able to remain thin"

And yet 75% of the population at the moment are either okay or just overweight. This is one of those news reports that really, really annoys me. Full of coulds and mights and ifs and very little actual facts.

I'm the same as angelsnow. I'm obese because I eat too much and I don't take enough exercise and it is my responsibility.

On the other hand, I would like to see a greater check on the food industry. It really annoys me that a sugar laden snack can get away with seeming to be a healthy option by labelling it's food LOW FAT. However, if I'm taken in by that, that is also my own fault for not reading the very clear nutritional information.

Sorry about ranting on your blog Spike. Thanks for posting the article :o)
