Never thought I'd live long enough to see this...

Never thought I'd see this at all. Ever!

Hi all,

Sorry for the long absence, but I've been lurking about anyway.

Today, I was over on James' Facebook page and found this link from a guy named James Christie.

All I can say, is, "HOLY SHIT!"For all those of you out there, whose spouses, significant others have wished that you could make money ( Read more... )

You're the first person I've seen who sounds at all enthusiastic about Kindle Worlds. Most seem to think it's a way for Amazon (and/or other corporations) to take advantage of people who want to be considered published writers by paying them a pittance for their work, which will then belong to Amazon to do with as they'd like. Not to mention, putting some professional writers who do tie-ins for a living out of work. I'm a bit undecided, although leaning towards thinking it's a bad idea all around. I'm certainly not interested in participating anyway. It remains to be seen if a) Buffy is added to the list of allowable worlds b) anybody I'd be interested in reading actual decides to participate and turn over their fic to Amazon. It'll be interesting to see how it develops ( ... )

I may have enthused too soon. I just reread all that, so not quite as enthusiastic as I was to begin with (read my edited portions ( ... )

*nods* I don't like the idea of a character I've created being used by someone else to make money of which I would get none. Which, if I understand the rules correctly, is what would happen if I wrote and turned in a story with original characters and it was picked up by, say, a movie studio who thought it could make a good movie. Amazon would own the rights. and they would be the ones to receive any money paid to option the work. So, say I made $100 over time on my "published" story, and they got several thousand for the movie rights.... yeah. I don't think so. :) I'm going to be surprised if Joss goes for this - given the huge fan base he has of ff writers ( ... )

I know, it's pretty amazingly ballsy of Amazon to have that in there - they think they're a studio or something? I don't know how it works with publishing an original story, but I don't think it's like that. I suppose that's the whole point, is that you're already playing in somebody's sandbox, so that's why the amt. of money you make per sale is that much lower, as well. Off the top, you're sharing your profits ( ... )

The work will belong to Warner Bros. and be licensed forever by Amazon, so I'd only put up a story I, well, didn't care what happened to it.

Other authors could write in your story's universe, as well as Warner Bros. mining it for future content.

The content rules are to rule out Porn-w/o-Plot fics and fics that include lyrics and brand names without permission. You'd have to be careful about using a brand name and not use them often. Like you couldn't say "Coke" every time someone reached for a soda. You'd have to say cola or soda or pop unless Coca-Cola is a necessary mention in the story. You can usually get away with brand mentions in dialogue if used appropriately.

I get that about the PWP, I've read some fics that have a loose plot, but mostly about the hot sex. If I were going to try to post O.N.L. (which I prob. wouldn't want to, given losing all that I've put into it to the unknown) I don't know how I could possibly take out or diliute the sex scenes in most cases, even if they're not a huge percentage of the story.
