I have been considering getting an email program for use on my desktops, but not sure which to go with. There are a few free ones out there, but am rather iffy on those. And I rather not pay for yet another M$ product if I can help it

Forte Agent (www.forteinc.com) is my client of choice, and has been since I first got on the internet in the 90s. It's both an email and usenet newsgroup client, and is still in active development (the most recent version came out in October 2014); you can set it up to check as many accounts as you like, and set up filters to route incoming mail to folders based on any number of criteria such as sender, recipient, keywords in the subject lines, and so on.
