Why I let a strange man twist me into a pretzel

Mar 19, 2005 22:35

The "strange man" of the title is, of course, my chiropractor Dr. S. I have to say first that he's a great guy, and good at what he does. There have been times when my MD couldn't do a thing (aside from an overly-generous Vicodin prescription) and Dr. S got me back on my feet in a few visits. I just get highly skeptical when he says that spinal ( Read more... )

I'm glad you're feeling a lot better!

Thank you! I'm even more flexible today. Yay!

Regarding chiropractors, I'm pretty wary of them as a group. I had a roommate once whose chiropractor was selling her tons of expensive supplements and telling her soon she could quit her epilepsy meds altogether if she used the magic pills instead. I went to this guy the first time (after a car accident) only because I was desperate for pain relief, and Vicodin can only take you so far. My father-in-law, who was a take-no-bullshit kind of guy, recommended him, so I was pretty sure I wouldn't be getting my aura adjusted or polished or some such. Very glad I went.

Relief is definitely of the good!
Hope that you don't have to have too many more sessions....

Yes, relief is most welcome. Life is already better. If I have to go back, it'll be much less frightening. It's when you're extremely sore and stiff that you start worrying you may leave on a stretcher. The little treat at the end is an ultrasound treatment, which involves his assistant rubbing a warm metal buzzing gizmo over the sore places (oil is involved), and everything that hurts gets nice and warm. (Instant relief for all your little achies? Hm.) It's not as filthy as it sounds, really. And it was only on my back.

I'm glad you're starting to feel better! :) Chiropractors are scary, but I'm glad you're having a good experience with yours!

When I was in high school, I slipped at the top of some icy steps and bumped my butt on every single one on the way down. When I went to the chiropractor, I felt better every other time I went so it kinda felt like he was putting things back in place one visit and then messing me up again the next so that I'd have to go back. It might not have been the case, but it kinda felt that way.

Ow! Ow ow ow!

I wouldn't be surprised if it was that way. I've heard some scary stories and I do not doubt them. I've dissuaded friends from going to psychic advisors and the like, and here I am spending money on something that in my opinion has all the scientific merit of aura cleansing and faith healing.

On the other hand, I gave it a reluctant try, it happened to work for me and (amazingly) my health insurance pays for most of it. Maybe I got a very talented chiropractor, or maybe I'm getting a terrific placebo effect. Either way, I've been fortunate.
