Which just leads us to ask:

Where do they get the fuel for the hydrogen? An oil/coal-based power plant, perhaps?

currently, i think all you need is some source of power, but that can also come from wind, solar, oil, coal, hydroelectric, or nuclear plants. some crazy germans and/or australians figureed out how to extract hydrogen from steam cuz from concentrating sunlight. some other crazy dude a berkeley can also get a bunch of algae to produce a liter of hydrogen gas per hour. there are loopholes but they can be worked around.

yea, I'm just illustrating that the vast, vast majority of our electricity comes from pollution sources to begin with, so by switching over to hydrogen, we're just shifting the gasoline consumption to those pollution sources, instead of eliminating them altogether.

in china, they use pebble bed nuclear reactors that produce electricity and also when you run steam over super hot surfaces, you get hydrogen out of it.
