I was completely unprepared, and although I enjoyed the beer I chose, I did not know what I was doing. I recollect that I had some very nice beer ( Read more... )

I can't remember how similar our tastes are in beer, but of the Belgian beers I recognise at the website, I like the Kwak, the Tripel Karmeliet, and the Delirium Tremens.

The Leffe Blonde and the Hoegaarden are fairly standard light refreshing drinks. I think of them as best in late spring / summer, and would expect to find at least one of them on tap at any pub with pretensions to Real Beer. They aren't too strong in terms of alcohol, which make them a good place to start.

What I do after that, if I'm unfamiliar with what's on offer, is say to the bar staff - I liked X about this one, what should I try next? Or, I'd like something a bit sweeter / sharper / stronger.

Sheffield fandom is currently meeting monthly at the Sheffield Tap, which is the old refreshment room in the railway station, http://www.sheffieldtap.com/ and has Far Too Much Good Beer. By the end of the afternoon I frequently don't know what I'm doing.

The Rodenbach Grand Cru is one of my favorite beers. It's on the tart/sour side. I've liked everything I've had by St Bernardus. (One of my favorite beer reviews was of St Bernardus Pater 6: "This beer taste like unicorns and rainbows had sex in my glass.") Delirium Tremens is nice, and I seem to recall liking the Moinette Brune as well, although I think I've only had that one once.
