you have made a very valid point there.
i believe that if we as social individuals can make it through this life and attain maybe two "real" friends - and i mean ones that are there regardless and not on a 'suitable for them basis', the ones that will be there for you through thick and thin - then we are very lucky people.
i often refer to many people as acquaintances as opposed to 'friends', as i have come to understand that not many people can really fit the criteria of a friend, well..maybe i'm just picky..
basically though i can understand what your saying

i may not understand you as i do know now you anywhere near enough to be able to analyse you.
but i pride myself on my high empathy towards people, sure anyone can sympathise, but its that step further towards finding empathy with a person that i strive for.
i practice what i preach, and i'm positive we all have different and varying problems and issues in our lives but their is always some way of finding common ground with a person.
