The thing about magic - there are always consequence…always! Spike said it - magic had real world consequences - setting things in motion. It was something he learned the hard way in season two after he captured Angel, and very cavalierly did a spell to heal Dru. At that stage he seemed unafraid and competent with magic. Whoa these are some really good points! That is what I love about rewatching this show, picking up on all the bits and pieces that fit together.

I've been putting the ideas together for a while. We tend to conflate spells with magical consequences. I would say the real consequence of Something Blue was a huge burst of confidence for Willow. yeah, she was sincerely sorry - but damn!

Thanks for these thoughts, I'd never made the link between Tara's death and Buffy's resurrection, I really like the idea.

(Also, it pisses me off that Season 6 went on that "magic is drugs" storyline when Willow's problem has always been her need to control, even back in the earlier seasons when she didn't know any magic.)

Absolutely agree on that - Willow wanted immediate gratification and constant validation. So magic was her drug of choice - like food can be a drug of choice. But magic isn't a drug - it's a part of her - the reason she relied on it for everything was her personality at that stage!
