I told my mom about this and we both agreed it would never pass , that there'd be no support, and the restaurant industry would kill it because they'd be out of business. It's one of the stupidest and obscene ideas yet. Not surprising, it's from a Republican.
And the scientific standards are so severe that at least half the country is obese. Yes, it's a problem, but denying people food isn't the solution.
Well, of course, it's from a Republican! Who else would have his head that far up his own butt? *evil grin* Denying food to people is, as you say, not the solution. Providing healthy choices at restaurants might be part of the solution.
Mississippi has, by the way, one of the highest proportions of obese folks in the country, if not the very highest.
I hope this doesn't pass. On the other hand, if it does, you know it'll get challenged and struck down 'cause the way this is unconstitutional can't be overstated. Also stupid but that never stopped Republicans lawmakers before.
The thing is, even though I've gotten rid of nearly 100 pounds in the last few years, I would still not be allowed to eat in a restaurant if this bill were passed. I mean, I'm doing what I'm supposed to do to get down to a more "normal" weight but they'd still stop me at the door.
I agree that there's a problem here (MS has one of the largest, if not the very largest, proportion of obese folk in the country) but this is SO not the way to deal with it.
Now, if he wanted to force restaurants to provide at least one or two healthful choices on their menus, well I'd be fine with that. (NOT that I would want to deprive other folks of eating their double-battered, extra-crispy lard-fried chicken, but it'd be nice if there were also grilled chicken on the menu. Just sayin' . . . )
I know a lot of skinny people who eat that kind of food and don't gain an ounce. It's not about the food. It's about dieting and taking foods out of the diet and then eating "normally" again that does the trick and makes us fatter. And then there are the pesky genes that determine not everyone is meant to be an ectomorph (thin). Teaching people how to eat and depriving them of nothing is what we need to do -- and we need to accept that there are some people who are born to be larger. I guess Arnold Schwarzenegger, Oliver Platt, Teddy Kennedy, and Russell Crowe should stay away from Mississippi if they expect to be served if this bill is passed. What are they going to do, provide each restaurant with a scale, height measure and insurance table to decide who does and does not fit the criteria?
