LJ Content Strike on Friday 21 March

Mar 17, 2008 21:08

I swiped the "bold" bits from ladyoneill

In protest to the recent "fuck you, fandom" from lj, there will be a one day content strike this Friday, March 21.

Please spread the word.I swear, if there were someplace else to go, I'd go there. I tried GreatestJournal and found nothing but grief there. I almost never even check to see if my blog is still there. ( Read more... )

I don't use the search tool so it doesn't affect me but it's just one more little 'we don't care about our customers' irritation.

Though apparently the terms are back. dunno if the strike is still on.

Apparently insane journal is the place to go. I have one there, but, like at GJ, I've never done anything with it. It's just a 'in case LJ kicks me off' contingency.

So, I'll keep standing with you for non-censorship.

I'll admit I'm pretty clueless about the hoorah that has gone on with this, but I do not support censorship in any form. It's part of the freedom of speech to say anything, whether the PTB agree or not. That's the free part of freedom. I'll support the strike.

You might want to try www.deadjournal.com. That's where I came from initially and it was at one time pretty hot. You can use the same coding used at LJ and there is no censorship. I keep a mirror blog there because I started there, but I'll friend you there if you go.

Deadjournal? I'll go look there. I did start a journal at GreatestJournal but that site was never easy for me to use and now seems to be disappearing altogether. I have also been directed toward InsaneJournal but I don't care for the look of that site. So I'll go have a look at DeadJournal.

I believe firmly in self-censorship. If I don't want to read something, no one can force me to read it. And if I feel that saying something would be counter-productive, I'm not going to say it. So, for me, that censorship works both ways. But that's a totally different critter from someone else (if you're talking about a government or a blogging website or whatever) telling me that I can't read something or talk about something.

*sigh*

As a queer and strong queer-rights proponent, the anti-fanfic aspects of this don't bug me near so much as the seemingly anti-queer aspects do.

But I don't want to freak over something without doing my own research.

The anti-fic aspects don't bug me as much as the "camel's nose under the tent" aspect. If they can censor some things, they can censor lots of others. Some, if not all, of the search terms were brought back after the strike was announced. I'm going to adhere to it anyway. Or try to.

I know that there was a too-do about censorship earlier, too, and some people left LJ.

Go Dreamwidth!!! No ads, women majority owned business and very responsive to user needs. Chooses to protect the free expression of their community members even when it forced them to change payment processors for a time and folks who supported them had to send in checks to tide them over.

I have free code if you would like to check it out. Just send me a PM.
