Oh, Mahopac

In case you haven't heard, Mahopac's school budget was shot down. This, I hear, is mostly due to the fact that the superintendent failed to change anything between the first time it was defeated and the second time. According to my mom, the superintendent actually sent a rather smug letter to the tax payers stating essentially that their taxes ( Read more... )

Well, at the very least, there is the cost of paying the directors/ faculty folks. I believe there is some extra money involved for being an advisor to a club. And I don't know what else they will be paying for, but maybe they have gotten more support for the company since we left.

Regardless, it's still a hell of a lot of money, and I probably wouldn't have joined.

That is simply incredible. Are there any plans to fix this mess? (BTW, this is your high school you're talking about, right?)

My guess is that this is an attempt by the superintendent to turn around to complaining kids and parents with, "Well, if the budget were passed, we could fund these clubs". Nevermind the fact that a newspaper article was run stating that Mahopac has 21 administrators that earn over $100,000 a year (including the new superintendent who was paid $208,899 a year plus $50,169 in benefits and a $4,800 stipend, according to figures from the state Department of Education. That's almost twice as many people being paid as much as the school district next to ours has. It's a bit out of control, I think.

I also heard that drama might charge students per show at a rate of 175 per show...AHHH!

And there's no guarentee that you'll get into a show, so it seems really ridiculous. Plus, what's going to happen to the quality of the sports teams? If you pay, are you on automatically? Or can you still get cut?

According to the article, you had to sign up for sports by August 21, so you pay first. But what the hell kind of team will it be when you have to pay to be on it?

The article had it wrong then.
"Students must register at msasports.org by Aug. 21 because the coalition must pay $345,667 on Sept. 1. Also paying the $408 fee will be members of the high school marching band and the drama club."
