i had to write this essay for one of my classes about how i got to college. i know its not perfect and that some grammar isnt right, but if you could take a min and read it to just tell me if it sucks or not. thanks
As a child I was taught that college was the difference between kids and adults. It was the major landmark in my life that I felt would signify the beginning of my 'life'. Well the truth is that my life started a long time ago. It was the help of parents, friends, and being a world away, that has gotten me here today. So let me start in the beginning.
My parents received a baby girl in the early hours of the morning on April 5th, 1986. Tom and Martha Sampson didn't know what they were getting in to. Ever since that day, they have been giving me endless support for my dreams. My mother went to college for a business degree minor in management. Also majoring in business my father got a minor in marketing. Business has been a stable part of my life thanks to them. They have owned over 3 businesses since my arrival and there is no sign of stopping.
When I turned eight I made the decision that I wanted to own my own business. The type of business has changed in my mind a numerous times. Anything from a veterinarian office to an amusement park has been tossed around. I had also already decided that I wanted a business major.
From the ages of eight to fourteen things were very boring. I was the butt of all the jokes, the smart one in the class, and the nerd. As a child, friends were very difficult to maintain for me. Thus, I spent most of my time at home. My parents were attending to their businesses during the day, so I was left with my babysitter. My carefully watching babysitter was my older sister Cameron. Going by Cammie, she is by far my best friend. We spent all of our childhood together. She is five years older than me. At times she was insensitive and made my pay her money to hangout with her; which I would always do because she was just so cool. Cammie dropped out of high school her junior year to go straight to community college. She was, in my eyes, an adult with confidence and drive for life. She is still my idol, mentor, and friend.
Sophomore year a foreign exchange ambassador visited my English room. All of a sudden the idea of leaving began to really appeal to me. Australia was where I had always wanted to go. Honestly, it was all because of the accent. In January of 2002 I left my friends and family to live in a little town called Batemans Bay. The scenery was like nothing I had ever seen. It was as if everything was a postcard. There I changed into an adult. Dealing with home sickness, learning about a new culture, and making new friends made me invent who I am. Before, all there was to me was imprints that my parents and my sister had left on me. In Australia I stayed with a family of four. Pam was my host mom, Peter my dad, Carmen and Tim my siblings. They didn’t like me much. I was too radical and independent for their tastes. But I did make lifetime friends. My two best Australian friends are Air and Simone. They inspired me to do whatever made me happy. They are both such great individuals that I feel honored to know them. Then the time came to say goodbye. I returned home ten long months later.
Since my return I met my boyfriend. We live together and have been in a relationship for two years. I have also enrolled in PSU with a major in business. It isn't because my parents had it, or that I felt like I had to. It just made sense. Everything in the world revolves around business.
Being an adult doesn’t solidify with events. It is the people around you, the events you experience, and problems along the way. That is the way I came to PSU.
