Reita and Uruha were eating breakfast at a restaurant before heading to work together when Uruha asked, “Do you notice anything different about me?”
Everyday Uruha would ask Reita that now. A few months ago, Aoi had broken off his relationship with Uruha. As typical of their friendship, Uruha had sought out Reita for comfort. And as typical for Reita, he welcomed Uruha with comforting arms.
Yeah, Reita loved Uruha a little more than he should. It might be said that he loved Uruha a lot more than he should. But depending on who’s asked, it might be said that he loves Uruha just as much as life meant for him to love Uruha. No matter of the answer, the fact remained that Uruha loved Aoi-not Reita.
“Um,” Reita said as he examined Uruha with scrutiny-trying to see what might be different. Reita wasn’t always the most observant of guys, so he finally gave up with a shrug and said, “What’s different today?”
Uruha leaned over the table a little and lowered his voice, saying, “I took off the necklace he gave me.”
Reita smiled. Taking off a necklace might seem unimportant to some people, but Reita wasn’t some people. Reita was Uruha’s best friend. Reita knew that Uruha always wore that necklace. Reita knew that even after Aoi broke up with Uruha, Uruha still wore the necklace he gave him. And because Reita was Reita, he smiled at Uruha and said, “I’m really happy for you Uruha.” They ate the rest of their meal in silence, but Reita didn’t need to hear Uruha say anything; his smile told him everything he needed to know. Uruha was on his way to being happier.
“Do you notice anything different about me?” Every day Uruha would ask Reita that. Some days it was just a simple change, like a new coat of nail polish or a slightly different hairstyle. Reita never could figure out what was different, so Uruha always had to tell him. Some days it wasn’t a simple change. One day, Uruha asked Reita, “Do you notice anything different about me?”
Reita shook his head after a brief pause for thought. “What’s different today?”
“Before now,” Uruha answered, “I haven’t talked about him once today.”
On days like that day, Reita would smile at Uruha. He would smile with genuine happiness for his best friend, because Reita just wanted Uruha to be happy. If Uruha being happy meant Reita would have unrequited love, then so be it.
“Do you notice anything different about me?” Uruha asked another day.
Reita did the usual of looking at Uruha to see if he could find what was different, but he slowly shook his head. “What’s different today?”
“I’m over Aoi,” he answered as he smiled proudly at Reita.
Reita grinned as he pulled Uruha into a hug and said, “I’m really happy for you Uruha.” And he really was. Some people might think Reita was happy because Uruha’s heart was finally free of Aoi-making more space for him. Or maybe some people might realize that Reita really did just want the best for Uruha and that’s why he was happy for him. Those people would be right.
“Do you notice anything different about me?” Uruha asked on a later day.
Reita looked over Uruha’s body, not expecting to find a difference; that was usually the case. But he was surprised to realize he did notice a difference. He smiled and shook his head, anyway. “What’s different today?”
“I’m wearing your shirt today,” Uruha answered as he tugged on the shirt he was wearing and smiled at Reita.
Smiling back, Reita asked, “Why did you wear my shirt today?”
“I like being around you and you weren’t there. So I put this on, because it smells like you,” Uruha explained. Reita smiled. He liked knowing Uruha wanted to be around him.
On day a while after that, Uruha and Reita were sitting on the couch in their practice room. Uruha hadn’t asked Reita the question yet, but he waited patiently-knowing it would be asked eventually. A few minutes had passed when Uruha asked, “Do you notice anything different about me?”
Reita thought about it before answering. He had an idea what it might be, but he didn’t want to break tradition by actually giving an answer. So, he shook his head and asked, “What’s different today?”
“I’ve been holding your hand ever since break started,” Uruha answered as he gave Reita’s hand a squeeze. Reita smiled as he squeezed back. He had been right.
“Do you notice anything different about me?” Uruha asked a number of days later. Reita inspected Uruha to see if he noticed what might be different. He did seem a lot happier today… but as always, Reita shook his head as he asked, “What’s different today?”
“I’m in love,” Uruha answered. Reita smiled. He was happy for Uruha. He had truly gotten past his break-up with Aoi and he’d found someone else to love. Reita would always be there for Uruha, through his sadness and his happiness. Uruha was happy right now, so Reita was happy too.
Everyday Uruha would ask Reita if he noticed anything different about him. Everyday Reita would look and see if he noticed a difference. Everyday he would shake his head and ask what was different. Everyday Uruha would answer Reita and Reita would smile at Uruha’s answer.
“Do you notice anything different about me?” Uruha asked on that day-the day Reita would always remember.
Reita looked over Uruha’s body, looking to see if he noticed a difference. He just smiled and shook his head as he asked, “What’s different today?”
Reita would always remember that day and he would always remember Uruha’s answer. He didn’t answer with “I skipped brushing my hair,” or “I purposely left my shoes untied.” He didn’t answer with, “I ate pizza for breakfast,” or “I'm wearing sunglasses indoors.”
That day Uruha answered Reita with a kiss.
