Chapter 01 Chapter 02 The next day while Reita was working, a tall blonde walked into the sweets shop. Reita was about to give a welcome, but noticed who it was and instead hissed, “Uruha, what are you doing here?! You know Sakamoto-san hates it when you visit me at work!”
“Fine! If that’s how you’re going to treat me, I’ll leave!” Uruha said with a huff and then turned towards the door.
“Wait! Come back!” Reita pleaded. Smirking to himself, Uruha then turned around to face Reita. “Come back in an hour and we can walk home, alright?” Uruha nodded and left. True to his agreement, Uruha showed up right as Reita was removing his noseband. As he stuffed it in his pocket, Reita asked, “What was it you wanted to talk about?”
Opening the door to leave, Uruha chuckled and said, “Ruki, of course. Is he cute?”
“Uruha!” Reita scolded as he slapped his friend lightly on the arm.
“What?! Your love life is a total bust, Rei! So tell me, what does he look like?”
Blushing, Reita shrugged. “He has red hair. It’s kind of longish, I guess.”
“Good hair? Hair is very important.”
“I don’t know!” Reita shouted. “It’s hair! Anyway, he’s pretty short. His body size is small, too.”
“…But is he cute?”
Blushing even more, Reita mumbled, “Yes, he’s cute.”
Skipping a little as he walked, Uruha clapped excitedly and squealed. “I wanna see! Let’s go visit him!”
“No! We can’t!” Reita said firmly.
Uruha whined, “Why not?!”
Reita explained, “I don’t want to bring you over there! I’ve only known him for two days! He’s scared of everything and you expect me to just bring a stranger over to his apartment without asking?!”
“He’s scared of more than just the phone?!”
“So far I’ve learned that he’s scared of the phone, crowds, untidiness, and crossing the street,” Reita answered as he tallied up Ruki’s fears on his fingers.
“He’s afraid of untidiness?!” Uruha asked incredulously.
Scoffing, Reita argued, “Maybe he doesn’t want to trip over something and hurt himself! It’s a valid concern!”
Smirking, Uruha sang, “Reita’s got a crush~”
Gasping, Reita blushed and spat, “I do not have a crush!”
“You so have a crush! You just defended his fear of untidiness! Not to mention, you’re blushing,” Uruha said as he laughed and continued to tease Reita all the way to their apartment.
Once they settled in for the night to watch their regular TV shows, Reita asked, “Would you be willing to talk on the phone with Ruki again? I want him to be comfortable with using the phone…”
“Crush!” was Uruha’s only response.
“I don’t have a crush! You didn’t see him, okay?! He was a wreck when I met him!”
Uruha became serious and asked, “How did you meet him, anyway? He never told me… just said that you found him on the street corner.”
“Yeah, he was having a panic attack about crossing the street. He was so upset! He was crying and even hyperventilating! I finally got him to cross the street with me, but he cried the whole way. I felt so bad for him…” Reita finished sadly as he remembered how truly terrified Ruki had been about crossing the street.
“How does he live if he can’t cross the street?!” Uruha asked.
Reita thought briefly and then answered, “Well his job allows him to mail in his drawings and then his boss brings him his payments. Ruki also mentioned having a friend that brings him groceries and cooks for him. So, I’m guessing he doesn’t actually leave his apartment much…”
“… Until his knight in shining armor arrived to save the day!” Uruha said playfully.
“I do NOT have a crush!”
A few days later, Reita had just finished working and purchased a box with a variety of cookies, which he planned to take to Ruki. He hadn’t talked to Ruki since the day he convinced Ruki to use the phone. Reita really wished Ruki had a phone so he could talk to him, but he realized that would take more work. Ruki still needed to get over his phone fear first.
Reita wasn’t sure why he was adamantly planning to help Ruki. It’s true they had only just met each other, but Ruki had a quality of innocence that really made Reita want to help him. It was disturbing that there was something that could bring a grown man to tears the way crossing the street had done for Ruki. Besides, Ruki said so himself that he didn’t interact with people often. It was upsetting to Reita that there was a person who spent so much of his time alone-not because he wanted to, but because his fears prevented him from having much of a social life. In the end, it all came down to a matter of whom else would help Ruki if not Reita.
His short walk from the sweets shop to Ruki’s apartment was spent thinking of Ruki. Reita reached the complex entrance and buzzed Ruki’s apartment. “Hello?” he heard Ruki’s surprised voice asking.
“Ruki! It’s Reita. Can we visit for a while?” he asked, hoping he would receive a positive answer. A buzz was the answer he received. Reita decided that was as good an answer as any and opened the door. He walked up the stairs to Ruki’s apartment as he held the box carefully. Just as the other day, Ruki was peering out of his slightly opened door and opened the door wider when he saw Reita. “Hey, Ruki!”
“Hi Reita,” he replied with a smile and opened his door all the way so Reita could walk inside.
Reita handed the box to Ruki, saying, “Hold this for a minute, please.” Ruki did as he was told and Reita slipped his shoes off, lining them neatly beside Ruki’s. Seeing that Reita had finished, Ruki held the box out for Reita, only to be told, “Actually, I brought that for you.”
Ruki’s eyes widened with surprise and he asked, “You brought me a gift?”
“Yeah! They’re from the shop I work at. I thought it might be nice if I brought you some cookies, since you don’t like going out much…” Reita said as he blushed a little.
“Wow! Really?!” Ruki beamed with happiness at Reita. “That was so nice of you!” he said as he walked into the kitchen. Reita followed Ruki and watched as Ruki set the box on the counter. Reita had to chuckle a little as he saw Ruki climb on the counter to reach something from the top shelf of a cabinet.
“I could have helped if you wanted, you know,” he said with amusement as he leaned against the doorframe of the kitchen entrance.
“I can handle it!” Ruki snapped. Reita didn’t take offense, though. He just figured Ruki was a little sensitive about his height and smiled at the notion. Setting a container next to the box on the spotless counter, Ruki opened the box and inspected the sweets inside. “Whoa! There’s six different kinds of cookies in here!” he said excitedly. Reita laughed thinking how cute it was he was excited about the variety, but then stopped laughing as he noticed Ruki climbing on the counter again to pull out five more containers.
“Why do you need that many containers?!” Reita asked with confusion. He hadn’t brought Ruki that many cookies!
Jumping off the counter, Ruki started placing cookies in one container and explained, “I can’t have different cookies stored in the same container, Reita! That’s disorderly!”
“Right, axephobic,” Reita nodded as he remembered Ruki’s problem.
“It’s ataxophobic,” Ruki corrected.
“How do you even remember all these names?!”
“They’re names of problems I live with everyday. It’s not that easy to forget,” he answered sadly as he put the lid on the last container and threw the empty box in the garbage.
Reita watched silently from the kitchen entrance as Ruki stashed the containers in his pantry in even rows of two. It was endearing to Reita, Ruki’s consistent organization. He couldn’t find anything really wrong with that phobia, but he knew he should help Ruki with his others. “Listen, Ruki…”
“Hmm?” he asked as he closed the pantry and turned to look at Reita.
“I want to help you overcome your fears. We already agreed on going together to take your drawings to Aoi. When is that?”
“Thursday,” Ruki mumbled, clearly unhappy about the plan of action.
“Right, Thursday. Well, there’s a start on overcoming the fear of streets, but you have other fears too. I talked to Uruha and he said he’d be happy to talk with you on the phone until you’re comfortable using one.”
Shifting on his feet, Ruki replied, “I don’t know, Reita… It’s nice that you want to help me, but I think I’m a lost cause.”
Pushing himself off of the doorframe, Reita walked over towards Ruki and said, ”Hey, don’t say that,” as he reached out to pat his arm comfortingly.
Reita quickly learned that nothing had changed in that area, because Ruki stepped back from Reita and pleaded, “Don’t! Please don’t touch me!”
Furrowing his brow with both confusion and a little bit of hurt, Reita softly said, “I thought we were friends… you don’t think I’ll hurt you, do you?”
“P-please don’t touch m-me!” Ruki stammered as he huddled away from Reita.
“Okay, Ruki,” Reita said gently as he held up his arms in surrender. “I won’t touch you. Will you please talk on the phone with Uruha, though?” Reita asked as he pulled out his cell phone and offered it to Ruki. Ruki just stared nervously at the object without responding. Reita prodded, “It’s alright. I’ll be right there while you do it.” Ruki nodded as he pulled out one of his kitchen chairs and sat down. Reita did the same and dialed Uruha’s cell phone number, set the phone on the table, and pushed it towards Ruki. He picked up the phone and held it to his ear as he took a deep breath.
“Hey Reita!” Uruha greeted.
“N-no Uruha-san, it’s Ruki.”
“Oh!” he replied with surprise, “Hi Ruki-san! I guess Reita convinced you to use the phone again?”
“Yeah… he’s very nice, wanting to help me like this. He even brought me cookies today,” Ruki said, becoming more comfortable with the use of the phone.
“Is that so?” Uruha said with a touch of amusement. “That was awfully nice of him. Tell me Ruki-san, what do you think of Reita?”
“W-well, I like him. He’s helped me out more than once,” Ruki answered, a little confused by the question. Reita, who was listening to Ruki’s half of the conversation, was becoming a little curious of what they were talking about; it seemed like they were talking about him.
“He’s pretty hot, right?” Uruha inquired.
“W-what?!” Ruki asked, startled by the question. Reita could see Ruki blushing furiously and now he was really curious what they were talking about. “N-n-no!” Ruki stuttered
“Come on now, Ruki-san! You can’t tell me you don’t think he’s attractive!” Uruha pried.
Reita was shocked as he saw Ruki get up and leave the kitchen with his phone. He figured Ruki wanted some privacy or else he would have just stayed in the kitchen, so Reita didn’t follow. Besides, he could always ask Uruha later. Yeah, so what? A guy who’s afraid of phones just walked away with a phone! Reita can’t be expected not to find out what caused him to leave the room, can he? Of course he can’t. So, he just waited patiently for Ruki to return. When he finally did walk back into the kitchen, Reita noticed his face was crimson as he set the phone on the table next to Reita. “What the hell did you guys talk about that got you to leave the room?!” he asked incredulously.
“The weather,” Ruki mumbled.
Reita doubted that was true, but he smiled and nodded. “I’m going to go on home, Ruki. I’ll come back and visit soon, though! And don’t forget about Thursday!” Reita said, earning an unenthusiastic nod from Ruki.
After leaving Ruki’s and as soon as Reita walked in the door to his apartment, he asked Uruha, “What the hell did you say to Ruki?” He walked over towards the couch and sat down at the opposite end from Uruha.
“He so wants your body,” Uruha stated with a chuckle.
“What did you say to him?!” Reita asked angrily, although he wasn’t able to hide his blush.
“I asked if he thought you were hot,” he answered.
“You didn’t!” Reita shouted, hoping Uruha was joking with him.
“Nope, I really did! He does, by the way,” he added with a wink.
“Uruha! How could you do that?!” Reita whined. “Now he’s gonna be awkward around me!”
“Oh, stuff it. No he won’t! He told me he was really happy you wanted to be friends with him, Reita,” Uruha argued. “He told me that after he said you were hot.”
“He really thinks I’m hot?” Reita asked softly after a brief pause in the conversation.
The only answer Reita received was Uruha singing, "Reita's got a crush~"
