Reita looked at his hand as it held onto his gift for Ruki. His hands were familiar with the feeling of a bass under their touch, or even the steering wheel of his car, but this felt foreign in his calloused grasp. As foreign as it may have felt, he couldn’t stop a small and satisfied smile from gracing his features.

Ruki was coming home today. He had been in New York with Aoi for five hundred years-or so it had seemed to Reita. He wanted nothing more than to greet the person he loved with a heartfelt welcome, including the stereotypical romantic accessory for any man-in-love-a bouquet of red roses.

Rolling his eyes, Reita grinned and chuckled softly as he thought of how undeniably cheesy his efforts were. He’d never bought flowers for anyone before. Never. Ruki was worth the effort, though, and he knew Ruki was worth the effort.

He nodded as he stepped to the side a little, further concealing himself from what would be Ruki’s first glimpse of the airport’s waiting area. Reita wanted to surprise him. He’d even gone so far as to request to pick up Ruki from the airport himself instead of having a company car take him home with Aoi.

Peeking over the shoulder of the person in front of him, Reita saw the beginning of a crowd of arrivals streaming into the airport. He watched contentedly as people hugged and kissed, knowing that soon enough he’d have the same opportunity to revel in his happiness.

He fumbled with the pocket of his jacket nervously and shifted his weight between his feet as he tried to contain his excitement. New faces continued appearing and with each different person, Reita’s anticipation grew. His mind could only focus on Ruki-thoughts of seeing Ruki, thoughts of hugging Ruki, thoughts of kissing Ruki with such passion that he would know exactly how much Reita missed him without Reita needing to speak a word.

Finally Reita recognized what was unmistakably Ruki, his hair covered with a hat and his eyes covered with sunglasses. Biting his lip as he tried to stop a stupid grin from dominating his facial expression, Reita excitedly tightened his hold around the alien-feeling flowers in his hand.

Four seconds passed. Reita had been counting and four seconds was all it took. Four seconds could seem completely irrelevant. Four seconds is how long it took Reita to tie his left shoe that morning. Four seconds is how long it took Reita to walk out of his apartment and close the door. Four seconds is how long it took Reita to unlock his car.

Four seconds wasn’t always irrelevant. Sometimes four seconds could turn out to be just enough time to change someone’s life. Four seconds was all it took for Reita to realize his hand should never become accustomed to holding a bouquet of roses for Ruki. Four seconds was all it took for Reita to see Ruki’s hand holding onto Aoi’s. Four seconds told Reita that that hold wasn’t foreign to Ruki at all. Four seconds of watching a painful scene between his best friend and his boyfriend, who were both giggling happily, was enough-too much-time for Reita. Four seconds was all he could take of the simple, yet undeniably intimate, interaction between Aoi and Ruki.

All it took was four seconds.

It took four seconds for Reita’s life to change, but it only took one second for that bouquet of roses to crash to the floor with the many pieces of Reita’s broken heart.

Surprise.

A/N: My mom and I picked my sister up from the airport not too long ago and there was a guy holding flowers. I kept hoping they were for his boyfriend XD XD XD Okay, seriously though, fanfic is the only time I ever feel remotely appreciative of romance. If someone buys me flowers, they better expect a punch in the face.

...What?! That's just how I say "Thanks!"
