“Why do you like these movies?” Ruki whined, sighing heavily afterwards. “It’s just people shooting people who shot people for shooting someone else!”
With a chuckle, Reita turned to look at Ruki (who was seated at the other end of the couch from Reita) and asked, “Why do you watch them with me if you hate them so much?”
Ruki could feel his cheeks heating at Reita’s question. “I don’t know,” he mumbled in response. The truth was that Ruki actually did know. Ruki knew all too well why he watched movies he hated. Reita was utterly and hopelessly in love with movies where people shoot people for shooting people who shot someone else. And Ruki was utterly and hopelessly in love with Reita.
“Well, it’s over now. I missed the ending thanks to you!” Reita complained with faux annoyance.
Standing up and walking over to his DVD player, Ruki kneeled and removed the DVD as he replied, “I can tell you what happened.”
“Yeah? What happened then?” Reita asked, a bit disbelievingly.
Placing the disc in its case and snapping it shut, Ruki sharply turned to Reita and raised his arms above his head as he answered, “Someone got SHOT!”
Laughing, Reita snatched one of the throw pillows on the couch and tossed it at Ruki. “Smartass,” he snorted as the pillow hit Ruki in the face. Reita chuckled even more as Ruki pouted, running his free hand through his hair to smoothen it. Smiling and shaking his head slightly at his friend, Reita stood up from his seat on Ruki’s couch and said, “Alright, I should get going. We have work tomorrow.”
Ruki followed suit and stood up from his seat on the floor with a groan. He took a few steps towards Reita and held the DVD out for him to take. Reita’s hand brushed against Ruki’s hand slightly as he reached to take the DVD from Ruki, causing Ruki to blush. He tilted his head downwards and ran his fingers through his hair, efficiently hiding his embarrassment from Reita.
“Well,” Reita started as he walked over by the door to slip on his shoes, “Thanks for having me over.”
Walking over to where Reita was standing, Ruki nodded emphatically as he said, “Of course. Any time, Reita.” Reita smiled at Ruki and gave a slight wave as Ruki opened the door for him.
As soon as Reita had walked out of the apartment, Ruki closed the door behind him with a sigh. Every week Reita would come over and watch a movie with Ruki and every week Ruki tried his hardest not to simply throw himself across Reita’s lap to stop him from leaving.
Ruki put one of his hands against the door with a silly hope that somehow it helped him be closer to Reita and spoke, "I love you." slowly he let his hand trail down the door until his arm was hanging limply by his side.
He wanted to tell Reita so badly how much he really, really loved him, but he was afraid of… well, many things. The possibility of rejection screamed at him, causing any courage he might have mustered for telling Reita his feelings to fly out the window. Change was also something Ruki feared. What if their relationship completely took a turn down Suckage Avenue? He was positive he’d rather have Reita as a band mate and friend, but not a lover than to only have Reita as a band mate.
Yeah, Ruki wanted so badly to tell Reita how he felt, but instead of telling Reita to his face, Ruki told him behind the safety of a closed door every week when he left Ruki's apartment.
A gentle knock at his door, as soft as it may have been, startled him out of his thoughts. Shaking his head slightly in order to gather himself, Ruki then reached for the handle and opened the door. Realizing it was Reita, Ruki raised his eyebrow in surprise. Of course Ruki hadn't expected to have a new visitor in the short period of time since Reita had left (had it even been a minute?), but he surely hadn't expected Reita to be at his door for the second time that night.
"R-Reita?" Ruki asked unsurely, stepping aside so Reita could enter the apartment.
Reita smiled crookedly at Ruki as he walked through the door and rubbed the back of his head nervously. "By the way,” Reita said, “I love you too.” If Reita’s words alone weren’t shocking enough for Ruki, then the event following surely was; Reita leaned forward and cupped Ruki’s face, kissing his lips sweetly. Pulling away, Reita chuckled softly at the enormous size of Ruki’s eyes.
“B-But… You… you…” Ruki spluttered as he pointed dumbly at Reita.
“I stay long enough each week, just to hear you say you love me,” Reita answered Ruki’s unasked question. Smiling, he leaned forward and pecked Ruki on the lips once more. “I was hoping you’d tell me with the door open one day, but I”-Reita paused, clearing his throat-“well, I was tired of waiting.”
Reita continued looking at Ruki as Ruki continued to stare at Reita in a stupor. Finally Reita jutted his thumb towards Ruki’s door and asked, “Would this be easier for you if I went into the hall and closed the door?”
The comment knocked Ruki out of his shock. With a roll of his eyes, Ruki gently punched Reita’s arm and said, “If you’ve heard me saying I love you every week, then you have a lot of I-love-yous to return!”
Laughing, Reita cupped Ruki’s face once more, leaned in closely to Ruki, and then whispered against Ruki’s lips, “I love you.”
