Reita sighed, tapping his glass on the bar counter as he thought about how he ended up in a bar in the first place. It was tiresome, he had decided.
He spent way too much of his energy trying to avoid looking at him for too long. It was exhausting trying to be in a mind frame of someone who didn’t want to spend every minute with him. When was it okay to invite him to hang out? When would it seem obsessive? It was hard to tell and took a lot of brainpower to try and figure it out.
And how much biting could his poor tongue take? It was becoming quite a challenge not to say, “You’re so cute” when Reita noticed his excitement over some random video game. It was so difficult not to be mesmerized by his guitar playing. It would seem very odd for Reita to be the only one not playing and he was quite aware of this.
Yes, it was incredibly tiresome and he needed a break. That’s how he ended up here. He had put on one of his baseball caps, pulled up his hood, and escaped to some random bar-hoping for some time to forget about his problems. Drowning his sorrows had not been the main objective of his night. In fact, he was only on his second beer. He just needed a temporary change of scene.
“More Sake please,” Reita heard someone beside him request of the bartender. He pulled his hood more tightly to his head. The close proximity of the person made him uneasy since he wished not to be recognized. Taking another drink, he heard a glass clank with the counter and a groan from the person beside him. Curious as to the severity of the person’s drunken state, Reita glanced to his side and immediately spit out the beer in his mouth and began coughing.
“Wassa matter with you? Don’t drink often?” the mystery person let his upper body lie on the bar top as he burst into a fit of giggles. He turned to face Reita-his cheek pressing against the counter.
Reita cleared his throat-finally having recovered from his startled coughing fit-and answered with, “No, I was just…”
“Just amazed by my amazingness?” he began to giggle again.
“Something like that,” Reita mumbled.
“You can call me Uruha if you like,” was the response of the mystery person. He smiled, the counter pressed against his cheek giving his face a smushed appearance.
At that, all Reita could think was Is he so drunk he doesn’t even recognize me? Shit. The hat and hood probably didn’t help matters-he realized-but he was content with the way things were going. Reita supposed he had been silent too long for Uruha’s liking, because he suddenly heard “Do you have a name?”
“Uh, I’ll answer to ‘Hey-You’ I suppose.”
“Thassa stupid name,” Uruha responded, followed by more giggles.
Geez, he’ll be a piece of work tomorrow. “That’s not my name. I just said I’d answer to it.”
“Oh,” he pouted. His face was still mashed against the counter and Reita was having a hard time not melting at how adorable Uruha looked. Uruha sighed loudly-and a touch overdramatically-as he moved his glass around in circles on the counter. “Hey-You-san, have you ever loved somebody?”
Reita smiled at the way Uruha called him “Hey-You-san” and answered, “Well, I kind of like my mom…”
“No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,” Uruha punctuated each “no” with a tap of his glass on the counter. “I didn’t mean that kind of love. I mean the kind where you have sex,” he uttered the last word as if he were nine and there were an adult merely feet away.
Caught between amusement and embarrassment, Reita blushed as he chuckled and offered the answer of “Yeah, I might know a thing or two of that kind of love.”
“It’s horrible!” Uruha whined, tugging on his hair with a pout.
Absolutely stunned at his drunken friend’s response, Reita could only think He’s in love with someone?! “You’re in love with someone?!”
"Isshard not to cry sometimes,” he commented in a quiet and sad voice.
“Yeah, I know what you mean,” Reita replied, just as quietly and sadly.
Perking up immediately, Uruha lifted his body off of the counter and leaned towards Reita-causing Reita to pull away and turn his face to the side. “You know how I feel?!”
“Y-yeah. I know how you feel,” he said, as he reached up and made sure his hood was still in place.
“I look at him and-and I just wanna hug him so much!” he said as his hands grabbed at his hair-his face contorted in misery.
Him?! Did he just say HIM?!
“Do you ever feel like that when you see the person you love?”
Staring at Uruha in a total daze, he mumbled almost robotically “All the time.”
“I hate it when he’s not around. I wanna be with him all the time but,” he stopped as he dropped his hands to his lap. Staring at his hands, he continued softly, “I always worry he’ll get sick of being around me.”
The sight before Reita was what he could only describe as heartbreaking. “Uruha-san, I’m sure he couldn’t get tired of being around you.”
Sniffling, Uruha brought a hand to his eye and rubbed at it gently. “You don’t know that. You only just met me. I could be really annoying or… or bossy… or boring or something else just as awful.”
Hearing his friend talk about himself with a possibility of being similar to any of those things almost made Reita want to laugh, but the tears he saw falling onto Uruha’s hand stopped his want to laugh easily. He wasn’t sure what to say to help the situation, so he just remained silent-hoping he’d think of something to improve his friend’s state.
“I really wanted to watch a movie with him tonight,” Uruha said, breaking the silence. “He really likes movies, you know.”
“Oh? I really like movies too.”
"You would love him, I just know it,” Uruha nodded frantically. “I don’t know who wouldn’t love him, to be honest.”
“Why didn’t you watch a movie with him instead of coming to a bar?”
He sighed, his shoulders slumping. “He’s been avoiding me lately. I don’t think he likes me much anymore.”
His brow furrowing, Reita rubbed his thighs with the palms of his hands as he suggested, “Maybe he’s just having a rough time. What if he really needed a movie night with you?”
Looking up at Reita hopefully, Uruha asked, “You think so?”
“You won’t know unless you ask him.”
“You’re right! What if he really needed a movie night and I spent the night getting wasted at a bar?! Hey-You-san, what if he’s at home crying?!”
Startled by Uruha’s attitude, Reita’s eyes widened and he stuttered, “I-I don’t kn-know. M-maybe you should call him?”
Uruha pounded his fist on the counter and stood abruptly. “You’re absolutely right, Hey-You-san! I need to go call him right now.” Uruha bowed as he said “Thank you. I hope you’ll call the person you love too!”
Reita watched as Uruha wandered off to another part of the bar, fumbling with his cell phone. He sighed wishing he had the same courage as Uruha and reached for his glass-downing the remainder of his now warm beer. Setting his glass down, he jumped slightly as he felt his phone vibrating in his pocket. Pulling it out, he checked the screen to see who was calling him.
Uruha.
…Uruha?!
Flipping the phone open, he quickly said “Hello?”
“Reitaaaaaa!” Uruha whined sadly. “Please don’t be sad anymore! We can watch a movie tomorrow night, okay?”
“A m-m-movie? T-tomorrow?!”
“Yeah, tomorrow! I’m a li’l tipsy right now, so tomorrow will be better. OH! Do you think you can come get me?”
“C-come get you?”
“Yeah,” he laughed sheepishly. “I spent all of my money on alcohol.”
“Uruha!”
“I’m sorry,” he mumbled.
“It’s okay,” he said. Realizing Uruha doesn’t know that Reita and Hey-You are one-in-the-same, he asked, “Which bar are you at?”
“The one we came to for Ruki’s birthday.”
“Sure, just… Wait at the counter and I’ll come find you, alright?”
“Thank you Reita! You’re so good to me,” he sighed happily.
“Yeah, well… You deserve it. Now go wait and I’ll be there soon,” he said before hanging up. Rushing outside before Uruha could return to the bar, he pushed his hood off and removed his cap-attaching it to one of his belt loops. He leaned against the wall next to the bar’s entrance and rubbed his face. He gasped as reality slammed into him with an incredible force. No. Fucking. Way. NO FUCKING WAY! Quickly making his way back into the bar, he searched the length of the counter for Uruha. His eyes finally settling on his lanky friend, Reita hurried over to him shouting “Uruha!”
Jerking in the direction of the voice calling his name, Uruha’s face brightened as he noticed whom it was. “Reita!” he called out happily as he jumped from his seat and stumbled towards his friend with open arms-enveloping the bassist in a hug. “I’m so glad you’re here! I was worried you were all by yourself and really sad.”
Reita smiled, hugging Uruha tightly. “Not anymore.”
