Synopsis: Ruki decides to confess his love to Reita.
Comments: Ruki’s thoughts are italicized. I hope you like it.
He watched as Reita shifted awkwardly on his feet. Ruki was briefly reminded of runner-ups in competitions. He desperately wished he could pretend to be okay-the same way those in second place pretend to be okay as they cheerily congratulate the winner. He wasn't okay. As much as he would have preferred living in his dreams-or just to deal with his feelings silently-he chose to be brave. He spilled his heart, the immediate response being a deafening silence. As smothering as the silence was, it gave him time to prepare for what he could sense was about to unfold. However, attempts at preparations for heartbreak tend to be futile and this was no exception.
"I can't change the way I feel. I'm sorry."
Why is his voice so loud? Ruki realized Reita's voice probably wasn't loud at all, but his words were screaming rejection. Afraid to look Reita in the eyes, Ruki continued his steady glaring towards his feet, noticing with dismay the tear that just splashed onto the toe of his sneaker.
"I know." Ruki replied, noticing more tears falling onto the cloth of his shoe.
"I love you."
"I know."
And he did know. Reita's heart swelled with love for Ruki, just as Ruki’s heart swelled with love for Reita. But unlike Ruki’s love for Reita, Reita’s love for Ruki was friend-shaped.
Still watching the tears falling onto his shoe, he tried to ignore the ache in his chest. Ruki was startled to feel arms circle his body-tugging him closer. Suddenly Ruki was sobbing uncontrollably, clinging to Reita like a drowning person’s lungs cling to their last breath. Reita kissed the top of Ruki’s head as he hugged him close, murmuring comforting words.
“P-please don’t t-treat me dif-differently,” Ruki managed to choke out between sobs.
“You’re my best friend. I’ll always be there when you need me in whatever way I can. Just because I can’t be there for you that way doesn’t mean I’m going to stop being there altogether,” Reita spoke quietly, rubbing Ruki’s back.
Ruki loved Reita’s loyalty. He loved how Reita was speaking sweetly to him as he held him tightly, telling him he wouldn’t abandon Ruki-reassuring him he would be by his side as long as Ruki needed him. Ruki loved that Reita cared about him. He loved that Reita was the best friend he could ever ask for.
And that’s why he cried even harder.
