Sonic 1's story/info During the first game in the series, Sonic travels across South Island to defeat the nefarious Doctor Robotnik, freeing his animal friends from their robot shells and making his way towards Robotnik's stronghold in the Scrap Brain Zone. Along the way, he's faced with many challenges, from the tricks and traps in Marble and Labyrinth Zone to the hazards found in Robotnik's Base: the Scrap Brain Zone.
Though he defeats Robotnik, saving South Island and his friends in the process, Sonic's journeys are far from over.

Sonic CD When Sonic headed out to visit Little Planet, he found it covered in a mechanized wasteland. Knowing it was probably Robotnik's work, he headed straight for it in order to investigate. On the way, a young hedgehog named Amy Rose got kidnapped by Metal Sonic. Not only that, but as Sonic traveled along Little Planet, he experienced time travel for the very first time, witnessing dystopian futures where Robotnik ruled. Not only would he have to undo Robotnik's conquest with the power of the Time Stones, but he'd need to rescue Amy for good measure.
The game's climax occured in Starfust Speedway, where he raced and defeated Metal Sonic, rescuing Amy in the process. Then he took on the Metallic Madness Zone and defeated Robotnik himself, freeing Little Planet and restoring peace.

Sonic 2 story/info This game introduced Tails, Sonic's sidekick and best buddy. Though they had a somewhat rocky start, it didn't take long for Sonic to grow fond of the kid, and together they pursued Robotnik as they journeyed along Westside Island. Even after thye made it to his stronghold in Metropolis Zone, the party was far from over. Together, the two of them pursued Robotnik's Wing Fortress until Sonic's biplane took too much damage, and he and Tails got separated.
All alone, Sonic fought his way through the Winged Fortress and onto the Death Egg without any rings to protect him. There he faced a robot doppelganger of himself and Robotnik's latest weapon, the Death Egg Robot. This giant mech proved to be Sonic's greatest challenge yet, but in the end he came out on top. As the Death Egg began to explode, Sonic fell down to earth. Luckily, Tails managed to fix the Tornado in time to rescue him from a fatal fall.
This wouldn't be the last they saw of the Death Egg.

Sonic 3 summary Sonic 3 marked the second half of the Death Egg saga. In this game, Sonic and Tails traveled along Angel Island, collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds and fighting their way towards Robotnik's Launch Base before the Death Egg could return to the sky. Unfortunately, the island's guardian, Knuckles the Echidna, got tricked into believing Sonic and Tails were the enemy. This led to the duo encountering many traps and tricks from the pesky echidna all while dealing with Robotnik's machines.
Though Sonic managed to stop the Death Egg's launch, the fight was hardly over.

Sonic & Knuckles In the second half of Sonic 3's story, Sonic continued his quest to defeat Dr. Robotnik. The Death Egg was still in one piece, and chances were that Robotnik would kickstart his plans once more. Knuckles continued to lay traps along the way, and it wasn't until Sonic and Tails reached the Hidden Palace Zone that the truth was finally revealed. After a brief skirmish, they encountered Dr. Robotnik at the Emerald Shrine. Though Knuckles tried to protect the Master Emerald, it was no use. Robotnik escaped with the emerald after weakening Knuckles with an electric shock.
Finally, Knuckles realized he'd been had, and he led Sonic and Tails to the Sky Sanctuary so that they could pursue Robotnik as the Death Egg returned to the sky.
It was a dangerous journey. Not only did Eggrobos litter the place, but a new and improved Mecha Sonic presented many challenges along the way. When Sonic finally reached the Death Egg, he'd have to maneuver through anti-gravity rooms and other traps before he could face Robotnik in a final showdown.
The Master Emerald's power was put to full use in Robotnik's latest mecha, and Sonic had to fight tooth and nail to bust up that giant bot. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough; Robotnik took off with the emerald in yet another mech, and Sonic had to transform into Super Sonic in order to pursue him in space.
In the end, he came out on top. Sonic returned the emerald to Angel Island, which quickly took to the sky. He'd return later on when Knuckles faced off with Mecha Sonic in Sky Sanctuary, rescuing the echidna right as the sanctuary started to crumble. They returned the Master Emerald to its rightful place again before taking off, presumably on another adventure.
• Sonic Generations
Sometime later, Sonic decided to revisit South Island. What seemed like a peaceful romp ended in chaos as a strange monster appeared, pulling the zone into Time Holes and dumping it in an empty, white abyss. Sonic had little time to act and wound up there with it, alongside Tails.
After Green Hill was fully restored, he encountered the Tails from the future. It was a short meeting, just long enough to catch sight of Chemical Plant Zone, and he was off to investigate! After making his way through the zone, he managed to rescue Amy Rose-- at least, it looked like Amy, if she was older. She made a weird remark about him looking younger every day, but he didn't think much of it. Instead, he continued on to Sky Sanctuary. There, he rescued Knuckles, only to get teased about his weight. Things were getting pretty weird, to say the least.
Eventually, he came across Metal Sonic. The two raced, and Sonic came out on top. Taking one of the Chaos Emeralds with him, he headed into a strange portal and ended up in a creepy hallway full of mirrors. Though he didn't realize it at first, the 'reflection' he saw was actually his future self. Not that there was time to act; the moment he heard Robotnik's taunts, Sonic quickly rushed after him and faced a souped up version of his Death Egg Robot.
Though Sonic came out on top, he didn't have time to celebrate, as the monster from before appeared and pulled Dr. Robotnik away without a word.
It wasn't until after the fight that he finally came across his future self and the future Tails again. The two Tails quickly discovered that they'd been pulled through time and space. After watching the mysterious monster appear and head towards a distant city, the two Sonics agreed to follow suit in order to get to the bottom of things.
Along the way, they restored color and life to a number of other locations and rescued more of their friends. The two Sonics collected Chaos Emeralds and kept following the monster, eventually discovering that it was weak to the emeralds. After they restored planet Wisp, the two Sonics uncovered one of the last Chaos Emeralds, and modern Sonic showed off his homing attack, much to Classic Sonic's surprise.
After the defeat of the Egg Dragoon, the monster appeared again and scooped up Robotnik's future self. Things were getting weirder by the minute, as the two hedgehogs came closer to the final battle.
Eventually they caught up to the monster, only to learn that the two Robotniks (or Eggmen) had been behind it the whole time. Even worse was the fact that their machine was tough enough to make mince meat out of the two Sonics... or so it seemed.
Fortunately, with the power of the Chaos Emeralds and the boosted morale from their friends, the two Sonics mustered up the strength to fight the Time Eater and restore time once and for all.
In the end, they came out on top. Everything returned to the way it was before, and Sonic's birthday party resumed. The two Sonics shared a few parting words, and Classic Sonic even attempted a homing attack... with less than perfect results. Sadly, he and Tails had to return to their own time. But although the future held many mysteries, Sonic knew it'd be great. It had to be, if his older self turned out to be that cool!
Canon Point: After returning to his time at the end of Sonic Generations. I'm playing him from the route where Classic Sonic rescued all of the friends.
Setting: Sonic's series takes place on an alternate version of planet Earth. Although it has many similarities, from cities based on Sanfrancisco and New York and countries heavily inspired by real-world locales, Sonic's world is far from reality. It's a place with a seemingly endless number of giant monsters and deities, from beasts that live inside the earth's core to gods of chaos made of water and genies in magic books. While humans populate the planet, so do sapient, talking animals with human characteristics. Nobody ever questions the existence of talking hedgehogs, crocodiles, echidnas, and other creatures, and ancient Echidna civilizations are suggested to have existed thousands of years before Sonic's hay day.
The biggest threat on earth is the mad genius Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. A self proclaimed scientist extraordinaire, Robotnik's goals have always been world domination through the use of his robotic prowess and any mystical gems he can get his grimy little hands on. In the past, he's built massive strongholds all over the planet, complete with Chemical Plants, death traps, and air ships. At one point he even created a massive space station called the Death Egg, full of dangerous weaponry, robots, and a giant mech.
In the genesis days, his schemes almost always had something to do with seven powerful gems called the Chaos Emeralds exist. Each possesses a great amount of power on its own, but when brought together the emeralds grant some (like Sonic) the ability to transform into an invincible super form, so long as they have gold rings. The emeralds' power can also be used to operate advanced machinery, like the Eclipse Canon on the Space Colony Arc and the Great Eggman Robo in Sonic & Knuckles. They're said to transform thoughts into power and are also capable of warping time and space.
Usually these emeralds are scattered across the globe-- or in the classic era, in completely different dimensions called Special Stages. In order to enter a special stage, one must either collect 50 gold rings and pass a star post or find a giant ring and hop inside it. The special stages are psychadelic zones full of bright colors and challenging feats, like spinning mazes and half-pipes full of rings and bombs. Sonic's encountered special stages and collected the emeralds a few times, but they usually scatter by the time he finishes and adventure for some unknown reason.
The Chaos Emeralds aren't the only powerful gems around, however. In addition, there are seven Super Emeralds with even greater power, and a Master Emerald that possesses the greatest power of all. Its potential is limitless, and it has the ability to negate and empower the Chaos Emeralds' (and presumably Super Emeralds') powers, reassemble if broken, and keep Angel Island high in the sky. As for the Super Emeralds, they're essentially like the Chaos Emeralds, only larger and with greater power. Little is known about them, and they've only appeared in one title. Like Chaos Emeralds, they are accessed through Special Stages, albeit much more challenging ones.
Another set of gems called Time Stones also appeared in Sonic CD. They possessed the ability to travel through time-- at least on Little Planet. Sonic collected these gems to prevent Little Planet from falling into a dark and dreary future, courtesy of Robotnik. They haven't been seen or used since then.
So what about those gold rings I mentioned? Well, they're a special aspect of Sonic's zone that grants a burst of energy and invulnerability-- to some degree. The rings allow Sonic and his friends to endure dangerous damage, so long as they've got at least one on hand. And for some reason they can carry hundreds of rings at any one time. However, the rings do not grant immunity to drowning, being crushed to death, or deadly pitfalls. They also disappear very quickly once they're dropped.
Moving on, let's talk about some more specifics of the Classic Era. The early games in the Sonic series take place on islands.
There's South Island, located in the Sonic 'verse equivalent of the Pacific Ocean. On it lies tropical paradises like Green Hill Zone, abandoned ruins (Marble Zone), bright and bustling cities (Starlight Zone, Spring Yard Zone), Jungles, underground Labyrinths, mountains, and more. At one point, Dr. Robotnik's base rested on this island, but Sonic managed to trash the place and put a stopper in the doctor's schemes.
Westside Island is very similar to South Island in its varied locations. Emerald hill is another grassy/tropical region, while Chemical Plant and Metropolis once served as strongholds for Dr. Robotnik. Aquatic Ruin features its share of ancient structures, greenery, and lots of water, while the Casino Night Zone is the place to be if you're into giant slot machines, bumpers, and bright lights. There are mountains, caves, and valleys flooded with oil... which is probably due to Robotnik once again. That Egghead never learns.
Then there's Angel Island, perhaps the most distinct island of them all. Not only does it have locales that range from icy mountain tops to sandy deserts, but the island floats high in the sky, thanks to the power of the Master Emerald. Knuckles the Echidna acts as the island's guardian, ensuring that the power of the emeralds doesn't fall into the wrong hands. At one time the island fell into the ocean, which is around the time Sonic and Tails stopped by. Fortunately, the two of them, with Knuckles' help, managed to lift the island back into the sky and thwart Robotnik's Death Egg scheme once and for all.
Little Planet appeared in Sonic CD, and it provided his very first experience with Time Travel. The small planet is said to be a place of miracles, and it can only be seen one month out of the year over a place called Never Lake. Strange sign posts are scattered all over the planet, allowing one to travel to the past or future if they hit a high enough speed. The locales are as varied as any other region in the series, with familiar tropes like the tropical grasslands, underwater labyrinth, and pinball stage.
Sonic's role in this strange and fantastical world is pretty straightforward; he's the speedy hero who saves the day whenever Robotnik tries to conquer the world. He's been fighting the mad doctor for ages, even before his first adventure on the SEGA Genesis, if the Japanese canon is any indication. And with his speed and skills, it's easy to see why he always manages to bring peace to the planet.
His latest adventure brought him into a strange dimension called White Space, where pieces of his world past, present, and future appeared, colorless and lifeless. This strange dimension is where he met up with his future self, and together they teamed up to restore time and defeat the mysterious force that brought them there. And by mysterious I mean Robotnik and his future self. Go figure!
Personality: Sonic's a brave and adventurous hedgehog who loves the thrill of adventure. Never wanting to stay in the same place for too long, he travels the world looking for danger and excitement-- at least when he's not kicking back with his friends or mowing down on some chili dogs. Upbeat and carefree, Sonic's faces his foes without fear. Though he knows when to get serious, his overall attitude is full of confidence, and he's not above poking fun at his foes in the heat of a fight. A good example is the ending sequence to Sonic CD, where he hops on top of a Badnik and waves before trashing it and the 'bots around it. Generally, fighting evil is a lot like a game to him, and he openly embraces any challenge Robotnik throws at him.
Though he may be reckless at times, Sonic's heart is in the right place, and he cares deeply for his friends and the world he lives in. Throughout his journeys he's made many friends and allies, including his sidekick and best buddy Tails, Amy Rose, and even a former enemy, Knuckles the Echidna. He isn't always the most touchy feely kinda guy with the way he avoids Amy's advances, and it took a little while for him to warm up to Tails, but overall he's a friendly guy who seldom holds grudges. Knuckles is a great example of this, for although he sprung numerous traps on the hedgehog as he traveled across Angel Island, Sonic still forgave him in the end and helped him out by saving the island and saving his life after a run-in with Mecha Sonic.
But while Sonic's a hero, he plays by his own rules rather than being a total goody two-shoes. He's got a strong reckless streak, and if busting through windows or trashing the place is the only way to take out his foes, he'll do it without a second thought. He also has a tendency to jump straight into the action instead of planning things out. In Sonic Generations, he didn't hesitate to chase after Robotnik after he egged him on. He didn't even give his future self time to react, rushing straight for the door and facing off with the Death Egg Robot.
At times he can be downright impatient, too. In all the classic games and Sonic Generations, if the player doesn't control him after a few seconds, he'll start tapping his foot, glaring at the screen, and pointing forward. Eventually he flops down onto his side and continues staring. 4th wall breaking aside, his impatience ties straight into his impulsive behavior and the way he's almost always on the move. His attention span's also incredibly short, and he prefers it when people get to the point rather than giving drawn out explanations.
Sonic Generations shows just how youthful Classic Sonic really is. His animations are full energy, and he's easily excitable. New places to see? Time to go check them out! What, there's an older version of him with sweet moves? Coolest thing ever! At first he was a little confused and even put off by people saying he looked fatter or less spiky or completely different, but once he met up with his older self, the two became fast friends. In fact, he really looks up to the older Sonic, rushing right over to him whenever they meet up and looking so happy to see him.
The two of them formed a close bond over the course of their adventure, and it really shows in some of the cutscenes. After they restore Planet Wisp, the two Sonics hurry over to the chaos emerald. Modern Sonic does a quick homing attack to grab the emerald, which absolutely thrills his younger counterpart. Then, at the end of the game, Classic Sonic tries to do a homing attack as well. It doesn't work out, but the reassurance from his future self manages to lift his spirits, even as the two go their separate ways.
His ranking animations are another example of his boundless energy and upbeat attitude. Score an S rank, and he spins around stomping with his arms held close to his chest, like he's about to explode with excitement. Then he takes off in a spindash and lands comfortably on his side. Other animations show him doing a quick spin and waving his finger or bowing at the screen and striking a pose.
At this age, he's considerably less talkative than his future self. Both Classic Tails and Classic Robotnik speak, so it's doubtful that he's a true mute. Since canon doesn't explain his silence, this next section is going to be pure headcanon guessing.
Anyway, I think his silence during Generations boils down to a few possibilities. Most likely, he likes to act first and talk later. If he can get his point across without saying too much, he'll do just that. Most of the time, his expressions and gestures get the point across quite nicely, and it's his older self who makes all the witty remarks. But, given that he was originally going to have a band in Sonic 1, is shown singing during the Sonic 1 Game Gear credits and in some pieces of
official art, I think there are times where he opens up and isn't afraid of chatting.
Overall, I like to explain most of his silence as... voice cracking issues. Given how sheepish he looked after a failed homing attack, I don't think it's stretch for him to be embarrassed by a changing voice. Plus, he spent a lot of his time traveling alone before he met Tails. And when it's just the two of them, there's probably no need to carry every conversation.
Abilities, Weaknesses, and Power Limitation Suggestions:
Sonic's most notable ability is his speed. He's capable of breaking the sound barrier without too much effort and can maintain incredible speeds for extended periods of time. Stamina is no issue for this hedgehog, and it seems like it'd take a lot for him to tire of running, spinning, and cruising along at a breakneck pace. This speed allows him to run through giant loops, up buildings, and traverse rough terrain like nobody's business. If he's running fast enough, he can also rush across the surface of water; handy, since water is his greatest weakness.
By combining his speed with his razor sharp quills, Sonic can perform some pretty impressive feats, including his signature spin jump. By leaping into the air and spinning around as a ball, he can bust through robots, walls, and other tough surfaces with ease.
Other abilities include:
- Spin Attack/Roll: Sonic curls into a ball and rolls at enemies and obstacles.
- Spin dash: Sonic curls into a ball and spins incredibly fast, launching himself at enemies and obstacles. Similar to the spin attack, only much faster.
- Super Peel Out: Sonic builds up speed by running in place and then darts off at full speed. Lacks the protection of the spin attack, but he can easily transition into a roll once he takes off.
- Insta-shield: When Sonic spin jumps, he can increase his speed to produce a temporary shield made of wind. It extends the range of his attack and grants him temporary invulnerability for a second or two.
- Homing Attack/Jump Dash: A work in progress. Sonic has yet to master this move, and can only dash forward while jumping. In time, he should be able to launch his spin jump towards objects and foes.
I mentioned water as a weakness already, and boy is it a huge one. Although Sonic can hold his breath for thirty seconds, he sinks like a rock the moment he enters deep waters. As a result, he's had to use air bubbles or aqua shields to make it through undersea locations like the Labyrinth and Hydrocity zones. And let's face it,
drowning is scary. His small size is another weakness, especially since he doesn't have a lot of muscle. At only about two to three feet in height, it's easy to send this hedgehog flying-- provided you can hit him before he darts out of the way. And while he can withstand lasers, death spikes, and numerous other threats with his speed and the use of gold rings, he's completely vulnerable without rings on hand. And let's face it, Sonic is no tank. He might be speedy, but bulky he is not. His arms and legs are like noodles, and while he probably has some killer leg muscles, overall it'd be easy to do some serious damage with enough brute strength. If nothing else, he's more likely to get exhausted from a serious beatdown than by running around. And if he's too tired to run, that makes him an easy target.
As for limitations, I'll only be giving him a few rings. Enough to protect him most of the time, but few enough that if he's not quick enough, he'll run out of rings fast. Also, he won't be coming with any power-ups or Chaos Emeralds. What you see is what you get, just one cool, blue hedgehog.
Inventory:
- His sneakers and gloves
- Ten gold rings
Appearance: Sonic is a light blue, cartoonish hedgehog who looks
nothing like a real hedgehog. Standing at somewhere between two or three feet, his body and head are very spherical, while his limbs are slim and noodle-like. He has six sharp quills on his head and two more on his back, and his eyes are huge and connected. He wears a pair of white gloves and bright red sneakers that can withstand the heat and friction from his intense running speeds.
Age: Actual age unspecified. He's several years younger than modern Sonic, so I'd put him at 10 - 13.

Hey, Sonic! Enjoy your future. It's gonna be great!
That was the last thing he heard as he scurried through the portal back to South Island, only to land with a resounding THUD! On top of a heap of metal. He cringed, rubbing his side as he slowly got back to his feet. Something definitely wasn't right here. First of all, South Island was not a place full of trash of any kind, especially Green Hill Zone. Second, where the heck was Tails? Frowning, he took a look around. When he didn't spot his two tailed companion anywhere in sight, he quickly slide down from the trash pile, taking a second look at his surroundings.
Nope, it definitely wasn't South Island. Ignoring the piles of trash, metal, and other junk, the strange voice welcoming him to... Sacrosanct (or whatever it was called) definitely felt out of place. Yeah, it was definitely weird, but then again, Sonic encountered oddities on a daily basis. If he could handle a time traveling adventure with his future self, giant rings that lead to parallel dimensions, and Robotnik's mustache, a little detour to an intergalactic dump was no serious setback.
He put his hands on his hips, tapping his foot as he mulled things over. No Badniks probably meant no Robotnik. Or Eggman. Was he seriously using that nickname for real? Shaking his head, Sonic started to move forward. Now wasn't the time to think about his enemy's naming preferences. Whatever the reason, he was in a totally new place, which meant loads of new ground to cover.
While he wasn't expecting a new adventure so soon, it was something to do. So with a grin, Sonic took off at full speed, ready to get a real look around.
Network Sample:
[Hello, Sacrosanct network! Have a nice little video feed of an oversized, blue hedgehog. He looks a little confused, looking around the area-- probably one of the residential zones-- with a small frown. Then he shrugs.
He scratches his head for a moment, and even opens his mouth, as if he's gonna say something. Really, there's a lot he could say. Or ask. And, let's face it, it's hard to translate, "So, who booked me a one-way trip to this stellar junk heap?" into body language.
But instead of asking, Sonic fiddles with his wearable. After a few moments, he'll type up a quick text message.]
I must've missed the memo because I'm pretty sure South Island doesn't have any trash heaps. And it's definitely not in space. Kinda doubt anyone booked me a surprise vacation, either.
So, is anyone gonna fill me in? I'm all ears.
