Good timing
I just watched this week's episode of How I Met Your Mother, and one thing Barney did really stood out to me in light of last week's events... Lately Barney has been dating a girl named Quinn and has actually shown signs of wanting to settle down with her. They moved in together, so in this episode, she's upset with him because she's gotten rid of all her stuff to move in with him because she knew he didn't want his apartment to change... but she asked him if they could at least use her coffee mugs and he said no.
By the end of the episode, he realizes that in 3 years he doesn't see himself with some random chick, he sees himself wanting to be with Quinn, so he goes back to his apartment and breaks his mugs in front of her and says that he wants to be with her for a long time and wants to use her mugs. Well, in better words, but yeah. Anyway, this seemed like the perfect illustration of what I have been looking for - someone to show me that they want to be with me for a long time. It doesn't have to be an engagement ring, it doesn't have to be a broken coffee mug, but there has to be someting definable that I can point to and say "that's when I knew he wanted to be with me for a long time." If it's marriage, great. If not, at least knowing that for the foreseeable future he wants to be with me is fine. I don't know if I'll ever get that with anyone, but I am hopeful it will happen someday. I've been engaged once, but I don't like to think that it counts. I just want that gesture, something to show that he really is serious about staying with me.
Anyway, just thought I'd share that. I thought it was pretty good timing for what I'm feeling lately. I do hope one day I'll have that... for now all I can do is live my life one day at a time and see what unfolds.
